Hey Richard,
If you are so worried about this potentially failing drive, why not just buy a new one and copy the data, quick smart?
I'd find it hard to regain confidence in that drive.

There is a handy (free) utility I use called 'HDD Thermometer' which will display the temperatures of all SMART HDDs on the task bar. You can set alarms and log the temperature to file as well if you want. I haven't tried to see if it will work with external FW/USB drives yet though.

Kyle.

Thanks for your concern.

The project is finished and I have the HD cooled with a fan that points at it.
It never even got warm yesterday after 5 hrs of straight use! It performed flawlessly, so I will stick with it for now even though it may be risky. I have other HDs if anything happens.

Just picked up a 1TB "Pro" MyBook Hard Drive (FW400/800 and USB 2.0) at Best Buy for between $400 and $500 (sorry I can't tell you exactly how much)... hard drives are so cheap now, theres no reason NOT to backup...so if you're worried about hard drive failure, just get some backups.
