singing in music videos
 

hello,

i was wondering, how rock/metal music videos are usually done on singing side. If there is need to stress agression or the bigger movement of lips, do they make the vocals sing slower, and then in the post they speed it up? Because in real time its not possible to move lips that widely while singing.

In general things are done in real-time. If you do off-speed for vocals it tends to add other weirdness (sometimes you may want weird), but in general, no.

Usually the best way to make it look natural is NOT to lip-sync, but to have the person actually sing. Most experienced singers will do this on a shoot intuitively, as opposed to moving their mouth and not making sound. Lip syncing is intrinsically wrong for most performers, so they'll usually want to do as much live as practical (actually play the guitar part, even though you tell them it's not necessary, etc.)

It's just the easiest way to make it look right.

Oh funny. That church is about 2 miles away from me. It's used in a lot of TV. I recognize it from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

There's nothing offspeed about the singer in the car. He's just really enunciating. There's a little bit of fast shutter on some of the shots in the car. When he's walking down the aisle, all but 1 of those shots are at about 36fps. You can see he actually is having trouble moving his lips fast enough for those shots, because when you overcrank to 36fps, you have to playback at 1.5x, which is always tough for guitar players and singers to move along with. The wordiest part of the verse (3rd shot) they used a take shot at 24.

Some of the metal guys are just really good at belting it out and staying understandable. Check out the Static-X video on my reel, Wayne is really good at enunciating fast when he wants to.
