Confused about the HMC 150's Progressive modes ...
 

I'm expecting my HMC 150 tomorrow. In fact I returned a Canon HF S100 after realizing the camera does not actually output recorded video at either 24p or 30p. If I understand the specs correctly the Canon camera records 24p and outputs 60i, giving me a frame rate of 29.97 fps. So I decided to spend the extra $$ for the HMC 150.

As stated in the HMC 150's specs:

"Records in full range HD formats: 1080/60i ... 1080/30p ... 1080/24p ... 720/60p ... 720/30p"

Then I see this in the HMC 150 manual:

24p Mode:

"The video signal will be recorded natively. However the external output signal is converted to a 2:3 format, 60 fps interlaced."

Can someone explain this to me? Is the HCM 150 converting progressive video to 60i (29.97) during Log and Transfer in FCP just like the Canon?

No. The progressive video is imaged, captured, and stored as progressive.

What the manual is referencing is that the video outputs (HDMI, component, and composite) all conform to the 60i broadcast specification. So if you monitor the live footage you'll see 2:3 pulldown added. If you play back the footage in-camera and look at the outputs, it'll have 2:3 added.

But the footage as recorded is native progressive with no pulldown.

Barry: So if you view the on-camera LCDs you're looking at 24P footage without pulldown?

Compare that to the DVX, when you're looking at the LCD, are you seeing 24P footage w/ or w/o pulldown?

I'm trying to understand why 24P footage when viewed on the on-camera LCD appears to be noticeably more stutter than 24P from the DVX...
