GS-100 User Reactions

For those interested, supervideo has posted some "user reactions" to the GS100 black model (aka the MX7000). There's also a partial translation of some material put out by Panasonic (mentions the blurring issue cited by Eng Yew Lew when using "night vision" mode). Yes, I am aware of the downside of supervideo (the hyperbole alone is enough to raise eyebrows). Nonetheless, I prefer to visit the site and then make my own decisions about how much to take seriously. I am assuming in posting this that others will do the same.

Perhaps post the link to make it easy for us. Thanks.

Frank, you're a good wrangler to try to help folks with navigating the shoals of supervideo. I almost drowned myself the first time I visited the site. So:

No wonder there's so much confusion regarding the non-existent MX7000 with its non-existent HD capability. Why is Charles doing this? Take a look folks:

PS: the mamba is a long, thin African snake. The GS100 is not long and slim, such as the MX350 and MX1000/MX8/PV-DV852.

Panasonic GS 100, pv dv 953, mx 5000, trv 950, trv 900

Panasonic GS 100, pv dv 953, mx 5000, trv 950, trv 900

Hi,

Can any one rank these camcorders(3CCD) based on resolution, color accuracy(with out bleeding), low light performance.

According to my observation(based on the forum's discussions)

The top performer on the top in order,

NV-GS 100K
NV-MX 5000
TRV 900 (SONY)
PV-DV 953
TRV 950 (SONY)

Please correct me if i am wrong and why?

I am going to get the top performer, in this case nv-gs 100k.

Thanks
sam.

The PV-DV953 is the North American MX5000 model.

I only played with the PV-DV953. I found the video quality to be amazing---certainly much much better than that from the TRV900 and VX2000.

Between the MX5000 and TRV950, it's a judgement call. However, I like the color saturation better with the PV-DV953 (MX5000). Perhaps Allan can comment.

Judging from Allan's findings, the GS100 has slightly better video quality than the MX5000. (Allan lives in Japan.)

Frank,
I know that "The PV-DV953 is the North American MX5000 model." The reason i put was, i learnt from somebody in the forum who compared american version(pv-dv 953) with its japanese equivalent (mx 5000) and confirmed that mx 5000 in fact has better quality in image than the 953, I will post the link when i get them.

He also justified that Japanese keep their best and release the sub model in usa. He also said, that may be 953 may have inferior optics than the original mx 5000.

"Judging from Allan's findings, the GS100 has slightly better video quality than the MX5000. "

I also learnt from the forum that gs 100 has superior optical image stabilization(not same as mx 5000) and a unique "crystal engine" to give better image.

coming to trv 900, it has better low light performance (with little color bleeding) than the trv 950(of course 950 has sharp image and better color accuracy than its predecessor)

Any comments!!

Sam

Thanks for summing up. Yes, I believe that I read that too. The MX5000 is probably a little better. Pana has a long history of stripping down their flagship hand-helds for North America, and sometimes they're not even brought in. One model showed up almost 2 years later (stripped down of course), but here's the kicker. Ready? Pana tried top flog it at almost 3X the Japanese price!

gs 100 has analog to digital pass thru?

Hi
Any one knows whether panasonic nv-gs 100k has analog signal to
digital conversion pass through (i.e with out storing them in dv tape
directly to send to computer for digital conversion)

Can you provide the related link also if possible

Thanks, your help will be appreciated
sam

You mean, "pass-through?" I believe the MX line does and so most likely the GS100 does too. But perhaps a GS100 owner or Allan from Japan can verify this.

Frank Granovski July 23rd, 2003 02:18 AM

Man oh man, read this from supervideo:

Quote:

Si it’s true, the MX7000 horizontal resolution of 600 lines. To be honest I originally confirmed 600 lines on a pre sales model (before production)

I submitted my findings to the factory in Japan but, the factory disputed this saying 540 Lines! The factory understates its performance. Why? I think the MX7000 performance hits the pro range for bang for your bucks; therefore sales in PRO could suffer… but I will go with my Wave Form monitor !
Now read this from our forum expert, Andre De Clercq:

Quote:

TV lines or TVL is a standarised definition of horizontal resolution performance for Television. TV = L/ph (lines of horizontal resolution on a horizontal length which is equal to the pixture height). If the height is 3/4 of the width and the width has 720 lines (pixels) in DV, the number of resolution lines on a horizontal length which equals the height, we get 540 TVL resolution for DV. The (theoretical) max number of pixels of the DV standard in horizontal direction (=max number of vertical lines) equals 720. In video, however, resolution is expressed in "lines per picture height (=l/ph) or TVL and this is 720 x 3/4 = 540. The 800 lines resolution is one of the irelevant specs belonging to the world of the many misleading information used in the semi pro and consumer world. Even if the cam itself had 10,000 lines of resolution it will end up by the 540 TVL limit at the DV output. The more initial resolution however the cleaner (aliasing) the 540 TVL can be reproduced, but the limit is still 540 TVL."

A/D Pass Through.

The answer is YES according to page 103 of the Jap manual. You can use either the AV composite terminal or S-Video terminal for analog input. In case both are connected, S-video takes precedence.

Cheers
Allan

Regarding 540 lines limit...

So how are they going to get HDV (720 lines) onto mindv cassettes, like the HD consortium says they are? Seems like more resolution is always better...

Samuel Raj July 28th, 2003 10:02 PM

Thanks Allan

I am able to figure it out.
