Better in low light...PDX10 or GS100??

I know the pdx is rated as being better, but is it in practical use that much better? Having owned both, Tommy H. could probably answer this best for me i guess.

Allan Rejoso February 13th, 2004 02:50 AM

Yeah, Tommy should answer this.

But before that, Tavis in case you haven't heard or noticed yet, Sony's minimum lux ratings are confusing. Why?

For exacly the SAME MODEL that only differ in language (note: both Japan and US are NTSC)

Sony US says: minimum lux rating is X
Sony Japan says: minimum lux rating is 2X

If you dont believe me, browse through all models listed in the Jap website and compare with the US site.

Following the same (marketing) technique, the GS100K could be rated this way:

Pany US: 6 lux
Pany Japan: 12 lux

Go figure.

^Nice pic Lee, GS100? Is that a frame grab or still?

So let me get this straight, the PDX would have a rating of 14lux in Japan? Conversely the Pana should have a 6 lux rating in N.A. right?

Tommy Haupfear February 13th, 2004 08:51 AM

Is the PDX10 better in low light?

Yes.

Is it enough to warrant the purchase of a PDX10 over a GS100?

No, not unless you need DVCAM and XLRs. IMO

The PDX10 will look similar to the GS100 footage with a little less grain and its more noticeable on a large screen TV but outdoors its a level playing field.

With either cam you'll want to have extra lighting for dim indoor settings.

Are you debating between these two cams?

Allan Rejoso February 13th, 2004 08:55 AM

The PDX10 is rated 15 lux in Japan, same as the TRV950, TRV80, PC300, PC109, PC105, IP220, IP-1K, TRV33 and the new HC40.

The ones with better low light ratings are TRV22 and HC30 (11 lux) and of course VX2100 (rated 3 (three) lux in Japan).

So why such difference in ratings of US and Japan models is beyond me.

...Conversely the Pana should have a 6 lux rating in N.A. right...

If Sony USA decides on the rating (LOL).

Thanks again Allan.
Tommy, yeah well i was thinking about a PDX cause my neighbour had one to sell, but i'm pretty sure that i want a GS, instead. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a huge discrepancy betwwen the two as far a lo-lite goes.
