Snow and rain cover
Would it hurt to leave the snow and rain cover on while shooting in warm dusty conditions? I know the underwater cover would be better but I have not saved up enough to get it yet. I would like to keep as much dust off the cam as I can while in these conditions.

Why not just use a bit of Saran Wrap?
It should be okay to leave the cover on---but how hot is hot this hot weather? If the cam gets too hot it will automatically shut down, I presume. -------------------------------- Stereo zoom mic VW-VMS1, w/adaptor |
Hey Frank, Sorry for the late reply. I was called out of town.
I had not thought of using Saran Wrap. Sounds like a good idea. The temp around here is in the 80's. You think that is to hot to wrap the camera? |
If you're worried about heat, get a small cold pack and Saran Wrap it to the bottom of the cam, that is, if the temp is too hot. 80F isn't that hot, though, unless you're using the cam in the sun.

Sounds like a winner to me. Thanks for the advice!

Don't Fret!
I have used a Canon XL-1 under some pretty severe conditions.
Take a look at: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthrea...threadid=15906 This should give you some idea as to what the camera can handle. Saran wrap seems like it would be a major pain in the A*S if you had to remove and replace it for any reason. I think that you would probably aggravate the heat issue as air could not freely circulate around the camera, thus cooling it. Your snow/rain cover should be plenty of protection for what you want to do. You could also use a "space blanket", shiny side up, to cover the Beast between shots, as I do, to keep the temp down. Believe me when I tell you that temperature, especially when it comes from direct contact with sunlight, is an issue here in Miami and I have never had a problem created by heat, except for the inevitable condensation problem. Thanks for the link Rick. I grew up down in Homestead. It does get warm but the warm breeze off the ocean is wonderful!
