Anyone compare GS400 to SONY FX1/Z1?

Hello everyone,

I read this famous link. http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/shoot3/

Does anyone know how GS400 compare to SONY FX1/Z1?

Or how GS400 compare to DVX100?

TIA
Leigh

Leigh, in what regard are you speaking? Overall video quality, widescreen, low light, etc...?

The GS400 is an amazing cam but its not really fair to compare it with 1/3" 3CCD cams costing more than double that of a GS400.

Are you looking to upgrade?

Compare the GS400 with a Sony HC1000. ;)

I think comparisons are best made between camcorders of similar size, cost, and format. The GS400 and FX1 are completely different in each of those categories. It might be better to decide first on a certain price range, a specific form factor and a particular recording format and then choose models to compare within those parameters. That might make the camcorder selection process a lot easier.

Hi Tommy,

Everything, but I am most interested to know how is the quality regarding making 720x480 NTSC mpeg2 file.

I am very happy about the 16:9 on gs400, no upgrade.

I know the result. 8)

GS400 offer ring instead of screen touch. I don't like to touch lcd screen. But gs400 only has one ring, I really like it to have three separate ring on gs400 like my fujinon s20 x 6.4brm-sd lense.

What is the result of GS400 vs. HC1000?

I know that most hate the touch screen on the Sony but how do the two compare on video quality?

All I can say about video quality is similar. Of course should be the same, because they are in similar price range, maybe sony one is little more dear. I never own a HC1000 by the way.

Tommy Haupfear February 26th, 2005 07:36 AM

Any experience about FX1 now? What do you think of FX1?

I'm still learning the ropes with the FX1 but I've been satisfied with the results. I'm currently playing back HD footage using the HD component cables but last night I upgraded Premiere to 1.5.1 which gives me HDV support so I can begin editing footage.

No way around it though.. I still need a small cam! The search (and or wait) continues! Although the GS250 is starting to look tempting as long as the street price comes off a good bit of the MSRP.

Hi Tommy,

I watched the video shot by fx1 and downloaded to pc using sd format(downgrade). The quality of that sd actually is no better than my jvc gy-dv5000 with fujinon s20x6.4brm-sd lense. IIRC that sony claimed that sd video shot by fx1 would be better than other minidv camera.

BTW, why not buy a gs400 which is quite good if you need a small camera?

Thats probably not the best way to compare the FX1 against other cams since its primarily a HD 1080i cam and video from the web can be misleading due to compression and individual editing preferences.

This week I'll be putting the FX1 alongside my VX2000 for comparsion and I will also pull out some DV953 and GS100 tapes as well.
