Focus Ring making Grinding noise...

all of a sudden my focus ring is making a slight grinding noise as though there is a grain of sand in there. its still hella smooth, but the noise worries me.

Frank Granovski July 14th, 2003 03:47 PM

Could be a grain of sand---perhaps a little screw fell out.

I had the exact same problem a month ago after i took off the lensshade to try on some filters. Scared the crap out of me but after 1/2 hour or so spinning it back n' forth the grinding noise finally went away. I agree it does sound like a small solid got into the focus ring track. Try a can of compressed air and a camel brush.

i have an aircompressor and tried it, but nothing.

you know what? i noticed it after i took off the lense guard too! hmm!

yeah im spinning it alot now to grind it down or whatever. its working slowly but surely.

----EDIT: damn, now it just sounds like its scraping the sides. not a grinding, but scraping lightly :(

yeah when you take off the lens shade, the groove bettewen the ring and the lens is fully exposed. Not a very good design I might add.

Stas Tagios July 15th, 2003 12:33 PM

Same thing happened to me: removed lens shade, replaced, focus slightly grinding. I think it could be that even when the lens shade is tightened completely down, there's still a little play with the shade backward and forward and if it's pushed back, it impedes on the focus ring. Try pulling the shade forward a little. It worked for me.

I will, however, check for sand and grit around the lens as well. Never occurred to me that could also be the problem.

Don't use pressed air. Just use a vac cleaner and try to suck the zones where the sand could have entered while you slowly rotate the ring

Yang Wen July 15th, 2003 02:34 PM

Unless you're using some miniature computer vac, most household vacs stir up a lot of dust and particles around it when it's turned on, vacumming your ring with the shade off just might get more dirt into it.

David Nussbaum July 15th, 2003 03:01 PM

moving the lens shade didnt do anything for me, because when i remove it all together it still makes the sound. i want to get a micro screw or whatever and take off those lil screws and the cover of the lens to see if i can solve it that way.
