Well the price is right. Very nice and small too. Still, YouTube 1440p footage looks mushy on my computer.

Eventhough it's still a rumor the gh4 is supposed to get a firmware update just before Photokina, I wonder if it will include 50p @ 3840 x 2160p, that would be something.

@Nate -

On my 4K computer/monitor, it looks truly awful... not sure if it's YT compression or what, but I have it at 4K resolution, and it is more than "mushy"... looks like (bad) SD in parts...

Looking at the specs on this camera it looks really close to the Sony FDR-AX1 ... 4k with only a 1.2" sensor, going to be terrible in low light ..... ughhh

LANC?
a panasonic with a LANC? there is only 1 2.5mm port so it should be lanc compatible for focus too?
I don't see any 3.5mm port.. am I mistaking the specs?
is this the first panasonic (ever) with a LANC?

With doing 50p/60p at 150Mbps is the same as the AX1 to XQD cards and for $1000 more than the X70 may present an issue for the 4K variant of the X70 though. It would record to SD cards, have 3 lens rings and record 50/60P. Maybe Sony will also go to 50/60P for the 4K of the X70 too.

i'm actually quite curious about the low light, it's still bigger than a 1/3", and they put in two venus chips, so there might be something decent to look at in the low light department. we'll see

It's hard to compare the x70 when no 4k specs have been put out yet, but that being said XAVC codec is so much better than mp4. If you look at the HD specs, the Sony does 1920x1080 60p at 50 mbps 10 bit 4:2:2 the Panasonic does 1920x1080 59p at 200mbps 8 bit 4:2:0. The Sony offers a less compressed file, meaning higher quality footage. If Sony can get the 4k to the same output as the Panasonic it will also be better because of the color sampling with the codec.

I noticed the same thing - mushy, smudgy images in certain parts, and that was on a 1080p 24" monitor that is now three years old. If this is what we can expect from the production version of the camera, and it's not due to Youtube compression, then I'd say Panasonic need to go back to the drawing board and upgrade the firmware or the image sensor (or both).

$3499 seems a bit steep to me when Sony's 4K AX100 now goes for less than $2K.

From a stylistic standpoint, the X1000 looks like an updated, upgraded AC-90. And maybe that's what it really is, with a new image chip and 4K processing guts. Methinks Panasonic are trying to make a quick buck cashing in on the 4K craze before the technology (at least from an image acquisition standpoint) has had time to mature and get all the bugs worked out.

Re: Just announced: Panny X1000 4k camcorder: $3499

This is the same concept as the FDR-AX1. Repurposing a cell phone sensor with a 1/3'' active image area to use for 4K. If you're wondering why the footage looks muddy, that's likely why.
