Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording

So is the FZ1000 worth the $$$

I like it from what i have seen, maybe not perfect, but i wanted to upgrade to a better, traditional style fixed lens camera than i have now, and i dont generally like DSLR type cameras for video because they are pricks of things to hold, however, i mount my camera on my small custom made hand held rigs or my monopod, so i figured it wont really matter now, and this camera does have the pivoting screen.

What i do want is to continue shooting my videos at 50p over 25p, so i am happy to do this in 1080, which the FZ1000 does do, and i need Auto Focus and and Image Stabilization built in, which this camera also has.

The 4k is a bonus, but only available in 25p, but thats fine, i will deal with that by altering my shooting style.

Cheers.

Say what, you have me stumped here, why would i have issues with flickering lights if i buy an ntsc camera that shoots 30p ?

Cheers

Check out a timelapse video

I set the camera to aperture priority, F8.0, shade white balance, ISO 125, and 1 photo every 15 seconds. I resized the photos to 1920 x 1080 in Photoshop. There were about 300 of them. Originals were 5MB and photoshopped were 600kb or so.

fz1000 arrived this morning and 2 issues
1st the libec 3dv Does Not work to control the zoom so if no other panhandle zoom controller will work It won't be a keeper
2nd the bestbatt ac continuous power supply doesn't work either even though the part number is correct. Another dealbeaker as I shoot for hours on end in frozen arenas where battery power doesn't cut it
Maybe not so hot a video camera afterall

I've read that in the slow motion mode audio is disabled. But now I've also read that zooming is disabled – is this true?

same here. If you go to DPReview check the preview of the camera, go to the third page and look at the picture of the ports, there is a micro HDMI, USB and remote -looks exactly like the one on the GH4, which is a 2.5mm). I am 98% confident that a libec 3DV will at least control the zoom.

Libec 3dv does not function in any way with the fz1000. bummer forsure.but a camera without proper panhandle zoom has got to go back :(

Returned it bummer

David - there is time lapse which is still images and there is no audio but I don't think there are high speed frame rates. Typically variable speed rates have NO audio on cameras. I think...

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording

Sorry, I'm speaking specifically of the high frame rate options.

I've read that the FZ1000 does:

120fps @ 1080p
240fps @ 720p
360fps @ 640x480

However, I've now read that this is not correct. So, does the U.S version offer these frame rates?

I've read that in these modes no audio is recorded - I can live with that.
But I've also just read that in these modes lens zooming is also disabled. Can anyone verify that?

Thanks!

OK, found my answers (partly) in the Advanced Manual online.

I don't know about the multiple high frame rate options, but I did find out that in slow motion mode focus, zoom, exposure, and white balance are locked in when you start recording each clip.

Biggest gotcha when unboxing the camera:

The hood and lens cap ARE NOT INSTALLED. That surprised me.

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording

I just got the camera this week and am thoroughly satisfied. I was going to get the GH 4 but it's nice to be going back to carrying just a camera and no extra lenses. The low light performance, manual controls, focus peaking, zebras and decent DOF are good enough for my uses. Oh, the 30 minute recording limit is no big deal: the camera doesn't overheat so you just begin recording again after a couple of seconds of the camera reaching the 30 minute mark.

One set back: I recorded a 35 minute video (4K mp4) but the camera breaks it up in 4 gig chunks every 6 minutes. With AVCHD footage, I use Sony Vegas' Device Explorer to join the 4 gig segments together. Unfortunately, that route doesn't work with the 4K mp4 files. I captured the files with the supplied Panasonic software but it too doesn't join the segments together.

Any suggestions on alternatives to joining the 4 gig segments together?

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording

....nevermind.....I was testing it with one 4 gig clip at a time. When I drag in the entire group of clips at once, Vegas automatically generates a transition between each clip and plays the entire event ok. So all is good!

Re: Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 announced with 4K recording

I've been looking at the Panasonic sales leaflet (with the help of a magnifying glass).

It seems to say or imply that there is no image stabilisation ("O.I.S.") when the camera is in 4K mode.

Is this so? Important facility for me who would tend to use the camera hand held at the longer end of the zoom range.
