Perhaps it's because you guys are across the pond. I've never had an issue or had people stop dancing because of my light. It actually does the opposite and people ham it up for the camera. Also, don't be afraid to bring your ISO up.

Oh I bring my ISO level to maximum - I'd rather have visible but noisy footage than dark and clean.

As for differences across the pond - dead right. Us bloody Brits are timid creatures before the camera. More down South as well unlucky for me. I sometimes get better reactions when filming people up north. I did a Marryoke in a Wedding up north and got so much better reactions than the stuffy people down south.
