More in depth info re: formats

Where to go to learn in DEPTH, all of the settings for the FS-100 and what it will mean.
For example, the FS-100 manual does not really explain much about recording P2 vs Quicktime vs Raw DV in DVCPRO HD mode....

QT is for NLE using QT format to edit. That way you don't have convert the native P2 format for NLEs like FCP. You can even edit from the FS-100.

I don't shoot DV anymore but if I was using iMovie to edit I probably would be using Raw DV to record in the DV format.

QT PN is to record 720p 60/30 or 24. In version 4 you can under SETUP set the frame rate you are filming and when you do variable frame rates it actually works the same way as the P2 card would.

JUST BE CAREFUL WITH THE FW CABLE COMING OFF DURING RECORDING. IT IS REALLY A PROBLEM.

I just shot a documentary using the FS-100 and didn't have any problems with the FW cable coming out, even when I was in the middle of a protest and surrounded by people.

But it did get very picky about the camera controlling the drive. It was only a couple of times that it would let the camera start/stop the recording. Then occasionally, without changing settings, it would work just fine. Only lost one shot after using it every day, and that was because I assumed the camera was controlling it and didn't bother to check the device. Thankfully it was just B-Roll and not an actual interview, but the machine is definitely not perfect (neither am I)

We used Quicktime PN and set the camera to 30P and got loads of recording time. Offloaded to a macbook to watch the dailies each night. Like I said, only one take that didn't make it, though if you're using it daily, it's super important to make SURE you format it before you start shooting. That said, P2 setting would, instead of creating .mov files, would just create .mxf. Doesn' go directly into Final Cut but they're still good, you'd just have an extra setting to get them in to FCP. If you're not using FCP, then go with P2 or P2 PN.
