Noisy Shadows - HVX
 

Hello there, I'm interning at an animation and visual effects company in Minneapolis, and I'm currently using the HVX to begin to put together a library of effects elements like paint splatters, ink drops, etc.. Most of what I'm shooting is against a black background.

I've been noticing a great deal of noise in all of my shots, especially in the darker portions of the frame. It seems like a lot of detail is being lost.

The bag of flour seems very clean, but the rest of the image is pretty noisy. I've been told that these shots are not clean enough for production...

It could just be the monitor at work. At home this looks significantly better... So, is this pretty much normal? What's the best way to reduce noise with the HVX?

Is this a joke? Are you nuts? This looks perfect!

I'm looking at your clip with a calibrated monitor (cal NTSC 1953, 609) and I put it through my KONA card out to an SD TV and a broadcast monitor - they all look great and I'd bet if I converted this for either Blu-Ray or SD-DVD it would be superb.

Seriously Colin, this has to be some of the best crushed-blacks I've ever seen on an HVX, especially considering you didn't blow-out the whites on the package - or the dust!

Dude, whatever you're doing keep it up - either your monitor or your eyes are what needs adjusting!

LOL!! Well... okay then!

Yeah, I'm definitely haven't seen this on a calibrated monitor... the gamma is probably way off on the one I'm using at work. But maybe my eyes need adjusting too. :D
