Wait... 1080P?

Hello all,

I am confused as to whether this camera actually shoots 24p in 1080. I heard it did, but then I heard that it only shoots 720p and that it only shoots 1080i. And then I heard elsewhere that it DOES shoot 1080i but uses the pulldown to bring it in as 24p. (If that's the case, shouldn't we just call it 1080p?) So can someone clue me in here? Is it true 1080p at 24fps?

Yes. The HVX200 shoots 1080/24p

Perhaps Panasonic is being a little careful after the crap SONY got for it's cineframe24. The 1080p mode isn't raw 24p frames as it is with the 720p mode. 1080p will work like the DVX-100A where the video is sampled at 24p but recorded to tape with a 3:2 pulldown to make it 30i. You then need to use a program that can remove the pulldown to give you your 24p frames. So it does 24p just like the DVX-100A does but it isn't the same as the 720p mode. Panasonic should just go ahead and call it 24p though since the DVX-100A is the grand daddy of 24p in this price range and everybody knows about it by now. Everybody knows it is 24p no matter how it goes onto the media. Im not sure if we get 24p advanced however. Right now from the specs I have seen it looks like just the standard 24p mode from the DVX-100A.

It supports 1080/24p in the same way the DVX does, with both 2:3 and 2:3:3:2 pulldown. And straight 1080/30p.

great thanks Barry! This is even better. As far as I am concerned 24p with the advanced pulldown is just as good. Although this does mean as extra step for editing our footage. With the DVX-100A we could use certain NLE's that would remove the pulldown during capture. With P2 we don't capture. So either we will have to convert the video to true 24p or NLE's will have to remove pulldown on the fly which may be tough on 1080 footage in terms of the system power. Oh well it is still great to actually have 1080 24p.

Even if they have to remove pulldown on the fly, I imagine it will take the same amount of time as "true" progressive. All it needs to do is skip frames. OK, in the code there might be an extra line or two but I don't think we'll notice it :)

That's one of the things I love about Sony Vegas -- it removes pulldown on the fly, in realtime. Removing 2:3:3:2 pulldown is instantaneous -- you just skip the third frame in every group of five.

Removing 2:3 pulldown is more CPU-intensive, especially when dealing such a larger frame size. But you only remove pulldown when you know you're editing on a 24p timeline, and when you know you're editing on a 24p timeline, that's when you should be shooting 2:3:3:2 anyway, so it should be a fairly moot concern.
