"Filming," "Taping," now ... ?

When I first started out as a PA I made the major faux pas of asking where we would be "filming" that day. The director turned to me as he packed up his Betacam and said, "Taping ... we're not using film. We're taping." That was the last time I made that mistake.

So ... what are we doing now?

"Solid-state storaging?"

Nah.

"P2ing"

That just sounds wrong.

I haven't seen this addressed elsewhere and I'm probably out of the loop ... and, I ask the question rather tongue-in-cheek, but, really ...

... what ARE we doing now?

Matt Irwin February 8th, 2006 04:36 AM

Well, we've always been "shooting" and will continue to be "shooting" when solid state takes over.

Evan C. King February 8th, 2006 04:55 AM

"Recording" also works.

Leo Pepingco February 8th, 2006 05:44 AM

I like shooting...

but I'm a naturalist, I will always say filming no matter the technicality, in essence, it is the art of film that has created the way we do things. We still "cut" we still "Edit" we still record sound, we also still say action in Narrative shoots and in the end, we still call it a film, not a tap, or a recording, or a DVD presentation, or a projection... We call it a film.

I say Filming is correct as anything.

K. Forman February 8th, 2006 06:25 AM

Video-ing... emphasis is on the O.

Pete Tomov February 8th, 2006 06:51 AM

Well I guess you can also call it 'flashing' !

Robert Lane February 8th, 2006 08:29 AM

You're working a "shoot". You have a "shoot" today. I'm "shooting" XYZ thing. I'm setting up for a "shoot".

Shoot. It's universal and applies to stills, video and film.

You may not want to mention shooting in the same sentance as school, post office, any government office, or bank.

Robert Lane February 8th, 2006 04:17 PM

Keith,

That probably goes without saying, but then again common sense isn't common, is it? (laughs)

Greg Boston February 8th, 2006 04:33 PM

How about 'aquiring' or 'capturing'? Seems more suited to solid state media.

Most over used joke of the 1980's.

Question: Who shot J.R. Ewing?
Answer: Panaflex lenses.

Isn't "lensing" in vogue in some circles?

Aaron Koolen February 8th, 2006 07:07 PM

Man, what an anal director, that's all I can say.

Filming....or shooting, or recording, or taping.
