My first day with the HVX and I'm missing P2 footage! What's going on?
 

Hi all. . . here's a puzzle for me. . .

I just today got my first chance to shoot with the HVX200 using the P2 cards. The first time, everything went according to Hoyle, but the next time, despite clearly seeing all of the thumbnails on the screen, several of them just wouldn't play back. It was like they weren't even there, despite having been shot and despite showing up on the thumbnail screen. I was playing directly from the camera, so this isn't a data transfer problem to some other device.

On the bright side, the footage I shot was simply beyond belief. It looked the stuff they use to sell High Definition TVs at the stores. I shot some dragonflys on some foilage over rippling water. It was simply amazing! (I shot in 720/24PN, 720/30P, and 1080i/30P.

What is going on with the missing P2 footage? How can I keep this from happening? Is it really gone? I can't be having that happen with I go to shoot my music video!

Are you talking about playback through the camera? Ext. monitor? Computer?

You can only play back clips in the camera that were shot in the current recording mode. So if you shot clips at 1080 then switched to 720, you can't play back the 1080 clips until you switch the recording mode back to 1080.

Well, there you go. . . I suspect that I didn't have the recording formats set the correct way. This camera is a BEAST, I tell you. I'll never figure it all out, and this Ph.D. is most grateful that you all have such experience. I'm utterly envious.

There are a couple of "funny things" in the menus. Not being able to playback thumbnails in VCR mode if the settings in the camera mode aren't the same was one that confused us. (You'd think the software would take care of it for you.) The other one that was strange was the need to go to Video Mode and 60i to do interval recording. And the fact that the record button doesn't stop recording in Interval mode was a funny surprise. The menu buttons being twisted 90 degrees compared to the menu display is another case of weirdness that just doesn't go away...

If there's one control that I would have liked on a dial, rather than in the menus, it's the framerate control. (We shot most everything in 720PN.) We often shot content at various framerates, and it was a (minor) pain to keep going into the menus to check and change settings. I'd love the be able to shoot at one rate and bump it to another rate in the middle of a take. :)
