Arrilite 650watts or 1000watts?

I cant decide which one to buy, Arrilite 1000 or 650? Is it possible to use 650 watt/ 220volt lamp on Arrilite 1000?

Aaron Frick August 10th, 2007 01:45 PM

It really depends what you are using it for. The 650w+ is a proper fresnel and focuses great with a really nice edge falloff. The 1k is a big plastic thing and while brighter doesn't seems to give as nice of control of the light. Both work very well with Chimera soft hoods.

open face

Both are open faced. I want to know if the Arrilite 1000 is backward compatible with lower wattage lamps 800watts down to 600watts 220volts.

arrilite 1000 w/ 650watts/220V lamp?

YOu could buy the 1k and a dimmer, then dim down to whatever you need. Just a thought.

I can't find 650watts "Arri" lamps, only general brands (DXW) is there big difference in quality of the light, color rendition?. I thought people buy arri lights because of the quality of the lamp/bulb, so most people buy arri because of the rugged contrsuction of the housing not the quality of the light since most use general brand lamps on their arri?

The arrilite 650 and arrilite 1000 are two different open faced lights.

Not fresnels at all as there is no lens or focusing mechanism. In general, you can "lamp down" on a fixture as long as the socket is the same; so given that same socket, a 1000w unit should handle a 650w bulb with no problem. Its generally not prudent to "lamp up" though. For instance trying a 1000w in a 650 is something not recommended.

Both arrilites use the double ended type R7S type socket so its just a question if the distance between the ends of the socket is the same for both bulbs. If so, no problem. Look up the bulb sizes for the two types of specified lamps and see if they're the same, if so, yes you can lamp the 1000 unit down to 650.

I cant find 650watts 220V lamp, Only 800watts 220V. Do you think it is safe to use 800watt lamp on arri 650? "lamp up"

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...cus_Flood.html

at B&H site the 800 watts 220v lamp is listed under arrilite 650. so it means it will work but I'm afraid it will do harm in the long run.

Hi Juan:

Danger, danger! I would never lamp up past the manufaturers rating. There are other factors at work besides just the socket. There are heat levels, amperage levels on wiring, etc. There is a reason Arri sells both besides just wanting to sell up.

Best,

Dan

The Arri 1000 is a pretty standard workhorse light commonly found on many film & TV shoots - the Arri version of the the Redhead. In Europe they use 800 watt lamp.

The Arri 650 is a smaller, more compact light commonly used on documentary & news work.

Which light is best for you depends on the purpose you wish to use it for. If you're doing a lot of travelling documentary work the Arri 650 could be the light for you. If you need a larger light output the Arri 1000.

The reflectors are designed to be used with the manufacturers recommended lamp and changing them to a different shaped lamp will compromise this. As has been stated, you'll also have cooling problems.

Both are good lights.

As I said, and Dan said too. Don't "lamp up." It's not wise at all.

Personally, I prefer single ended lamps for everything and that would be GY9.5. I didn't know they had a GY9.5 version of the arrilite. On the website I only saw the R7S version.

I just order another Arrilite 1000w. so have now 650 and 1000 floods. whats next? 300 fresnel or 150fresnel?

I wouldn't count on that rugged construction too much. I have seen the housing of an Arri open face break from only once falling over. At the same time the focussing wheel broke. On the other hand I have used a Gunlux open face that fell multiple times during a shoot due to wind - and nothing happened. The housing is still ok, only one barndoor looks bad, but that's it.

I'm not saying Arri is bad, but often you pay more just for the name, and sometimes you could get better quality from another brand for less money...

Richard Andrewski August 11th, 2007 06:17 PM

That's a pretty true statement but not what I would expect from someone living in Germany ;-)
