Arri vs. Pepper

Tungsten Fresnels

Item 1: LTM lists the weight of a Pepper 200/300/420 as 51 oz, Arri lists the weight of the 300 Fresnel as 104 oz. The cords are 11 ft for the LTM, 25 ft for the Arri. the Pepper 100 is 32 oz, Arri 150 33 oz. The Pepper 650 is 99 oz, Arri 650 115 (with 11' and 25' cords respectively)

Is that weight difference in the 300 w unit true?

Item 2: The Pepper has a cast aluminum case with a Pyrex lens. The Arri has an extruded aluminum case with a "low expansion
borosilicate" lens.

Is there a difference in durability? (For me, this is mainly a damage in transport issue)

Item 3; Other than the lens material, the Pepper reflector is "Type A9 aluminum; polished and anodized". The Arri reflector is "Spherical specular high
purity aluminum".

Is there a difference in the quality of the light?

Thanks,

David

When i bought may arri fresnel I had looked at the pepper and the lighting guru at Cinequip in Toronto showed me what he believed to be a major flaw. The mirror support arm in the pepper is very prone to bending where as the Arri's is not.

Bryan, are there good prices to be found at Cinequip? Sounds like the closest Arri dealer around.

I paid less than I would have at B&H by around $50. there philosophy seems to have changed. Call and talk to Scott Winters.
Arri comes direcrtly from Germany, so it should still be cheaper. Scotts a reasonable guy, just call a spade a spade.

Thanks Bryan, I'll get in touch with Scott!

I looked at the Pepper and Arri at B&H today. Opened them up. I think the Arri looked a lot better under the covers.

Ended up buying an Arri 650 with 300w and 650w bulbs.

So, the Arris can 'lamp down' without any trouble? Good. Cinequip (thanks Brian) quoted me $442 CDN for the Arri 650W Fresnel, a mere $19 more than the 300W Fresnel. So when the time comes, I might as well just get the 650, and a few 300 watt lamps to cover my bases.

Brian, I didn't get to correspond with Scott. I'll be passing by Barrie in October on my way to Killarney for a 5 day hike. Perhaps enroute I can stop by Cinequip and take a good look at the Arris. Btw - Is $442 a good price up here?
