Advice on Lighting Kits

Hello folks.

In the next fortnight, I'm looking to purchase a brand spanking new lighting kit. It'll be used with my XL2, and XL1 for both location and interview shooting, as well as some creative type ventures.

The two best lighting rigs available through my local(ish) video retailer are:

- The Lowel DV Creator 55 Kit
Which contains:
1 Rifa-lite 55 (LC-55)
1 500w, 120v lamp (EHC)
1 Pro-light (P1-10)
1 Pro-light 4-way Barndoors (iP-20)
1 250w, 120v lamp (GCA)
1 Omni-light (O1-10)
1 Omni-light 4-way Barndoors (O1-20)
1 500w, 120v lamp (FTK)
1 Tota-light (T1-10)
1 750w, 120v lamp (EMD)
3 Uni TO Stands (UN-55)
1 KS Jr. Stand (DT-33)
1 Tota-frame (T1-20)
1 Assorted Gels (T1-78)
1 Pro & i Gel Frame (iP40)
1 iP Assorted Gels (iP-78)
1 Flexi-shaft pkg (2) (T1-50)
1 Tota-flag (T1-52)
1 Tota-brella (T1-25)
1 T/O Lampak (TO-61)
1 DP/Tota Lampak (DT-61)
1 TO-83 Case
(http://www.videoguys.com.au/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=512)
Which I can get for AU$2,899

- And the Ianiro Varibeam 800 Redhead Kit
Which includes:
Tungsten 3200° K
3x VARIBEAM RED HEADS yoke mount with the following accessories:
3x barndoors,
3x wire guards,
3x stands (cod.301),
3x DXX 800W 240V lamps.
1x THREE head Cordura Carry Case included.
1x LEE-FSP Filter Starter Pack
(http://www.videoguys.com.au/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1225)
Which I can get for AU$2,125

Now of these two lighting kits, which are the best for my intentions? Are they both sturdy and reliable kits? I would prefer to buy everything in a kit at this time, as I want it all ready soon, and don't have the dedication to run around all over the place. But if you know of any other lighting kits of a higher quality, a decent price and that are available in Australia, then please reccomend away.

So what are your thoughts on my lighting kit predicament? Have I given enough information?

Cheers,
Tim

Richard,

Thank you for the reply. I was beginning to think this thread would die a silent death.

My dealer of choice right now is VideoGuys Australia (http://www.videoguys.com.au) but have also had dealings with Lemac (http://www.lemac.com.au) and Tasman AV (http://www.tasmanav.com.au).

I noticed on the Chimera website, that you have only one dealer in Australia, John Barry in NSW. And although softboxes and diffusers of the type aren't my number one priority at this point (although I will certainly be looking at purchasing in the near future) which lights (Redhead/Tota & Lowel Prolights/any other suggestions) do you think would complement best my needs?

Thanks again mate,
Tim

They are all good

I would consider our item 8000 kit

and some tota's

and a Fresnel

or later you can use tota's in banks and they work great.

I will try to find out more about your dealer and Export price for kit.

Will you be in the USA? NAB?
Thanks

Tim White AU March 21st, 2005 05:03 AM

The 8000 kit looks very decent, let me know the costs involved to get it over here.

And there's no chance I'll be anywhere near the USA for next few years, funds and time just won't allow it. So I think I will have to miss another NAB *sniff*.

Thanks mate,
Tim
