Which on-camera light for XL1-s: LED?

Hi,

I'd like to buy an on-camera light for my XL1-S. We're gonna be shooting a docu in Africa soon and power will be intermittent so efficiency and reliability are essential. We also need to be able to buy the lamp ASAP from a UK supplier.

My present favorite is the IDX X3-Lite 35W OnCamera Light.

Has anyone used this? Is it any good? What alternatives should I be looking at?

What's the best way to power it? How about an 11.1v Lithium Polymer battery?

Many thanks,
Jack

Jack, I could be wrong... "300Lx @ 3 ft." doesn't sound all that bright to me, and it's going to dropp off fast with every foot you're further away from your subject. I guess it depends on what you'll be shooting with it. As long as you stay fairy cose and tight on your subject, it might work for you.

Hey there.
We also make LED on-camera lights. We did NOT go with lumileds/luxeons as we did not find an acceptable solution do make the light nice and diffused without loosing too much of the light's intensity.
We therefore opted to go with a quantity of 5mm LEDs, and this works out very well: our beam angle is nice and wide (about 40 degrees) and it is VERY EVEN.

Our lights use 4, 6 or 8W.
If you like, email me, as we may be able to send you a kit to take with you for your documentary filming as a promotional deal. Maybe in exchange for a little review at the end?

Cheers,
Marius

Great, thanks a lot for your reply! (Sorry for taking SO long to get back to you!)

I think you would be better off using an incandescent on camera light. These LED lights while sounding cool are not efficient enough for most applications.
