Just curious, does that head make motor noise that the camera can pick up? How fast does it pan?

You can adjust the speed of the pan/tilt. The noise isn't audible on the slower settings, but if you move it fast, you'll hear it slightly... I used it on my second camera that I wasn't using audio with...

I have a 10 foot crane. How long's the controller wire?

yes, ntsc but this can be modified by canon to shoot in PAL
