Problem with a sale, opinion please.

I guess I could have posted this in a diiferent category, but it deals with buying and selling on DVINFO. I recently sold my camera thanks to this board, the individual seems like a great person, we have had several good conversations on the phone, he received the camera about 10 days ago, he seemed satisfied with the condition as I described it (FX1 in excellent condition) he purchased it for $1900 for around 100 hours on it. Before he purchased it from me he asked if I knew anything about connecting the firewire up to the camera and if there was aproper sequence to doing so, I told him I have never experienced the problem before (I always leave my cable connected up to the computer side, I only have to connect to the camera side). I had 3 of these cameras, bought them when they first came out, so have alot of experience with them. Anyway, yesterday, he contacts me and asks how to set up the camera for the computer to detect it (he uses MAC and I am PC) We walked through the setup, to change it back to my original capture settings (I sent it ready to capture HDV downconverted through camera) He could not get his MAC to see it, we then tried a VISTA system, and lastly tried an XP pro w/service pack 2, still not working. I tested the camera before putting it into the box, and it has always worked for me previously. I found it quite odd that the exact problem he mentioned to me before the purchase is the problem we are now encountering. I want to do what is right, but I can't help but believe something was done wrong on his end. If I pay to get it fixed then I sold the camera for $1400. I want to do what is right, but need some help and opinions on what you all would do in my situation. I believe him to be honest, but it does not proclude someone from doing something wrong accidentally. Please help me to figure the best route to take, If this needs to be posted somewhere else please forgive me, but I figured the buyers and the sellers would have the best input.

Thanks
Mike

Mike Teutsch December 7th, 2007 07:22 AM

Michael,

Kind of sounds like he may have a bad firewire! Have him check that first.

If it still does not work, I would have him send it back to you to be checked out. I would not agree to pay for any repairs before you see the camera. My personal opinion is that if you are sure it worked when you shipped it, I would not pay for the repair. If you are not sure then I might consider it. Either way, I would not pay for it to be repaired for him. I would only give a refund and get the camera back for repair and resale.

Not trying to be a hard ass, but I would not give him any money back until you have the camera in your hands and check it out. He will have to trust you, period.

Best of luck and I hope he has a bad firewire.

Mike
