I was in the same boat, which is why I finally paid for a subscription.

RES is still great despite the fact that Adam Wilt and I are no longer listed on the masthead (curse you, Jon Scalise! It was a pretty easy ride while it lasted).

;-)

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but what is a "masthead"? Did you write for Res?

videographer magazine

Does anyone know of any good videographer magazines out there? I would prefer ones that focused on filming wildlife, editing, and producing videos. I see that there is one called Computer Video Magazine. Does anyone have an opinion on that one?

Frank Granovski April 15th, 2004 02:46 PM

DV Magazine and Videographer Magazine, I also find Camcorder Video good when Peter Utz has written some of the articles.

Maybe you can find some information here:

http://www.rondexter.com/

Gale Smith April 15th, 2004 03:32 PM

Frank-

Which of those three is the best?

Frank Granovski April 15th, 2004 04:35 PM

Videographer Magazine, in my opinion. For the DV greenhorn, ComputerVideo. (Forget Videomaker.)

Note: Videographer (CMP), DV Mag (CMP) and ComputerVideo are all owned by Miller.

K. Forman April 15th, 2004 06:39 PM

I like DV the best. Sometimes though, Videomaker has a worthwhile article covering video basics. It doesn't hurt to thumb through them, while drinking cappucino at Barnes and Noble bookstore ;) You'll find the one that fits you best.

Videomaker even has free issues, trying to get you to subscribe. DV sometimes has free subscriptions. I just got a second year for free.

Mike Rehmus April 15th, 2004 07:14 PM

Videography and DV Mag are free if you are an industry 'pro,' or so they say. I don't pay for any of them and I didn't have to ask. The subs were offered. I do not know why except I did attend a couple of trade shows.

K. Forman April 15th, 2004 08:00 PM

Sounds about right, Mike. Other than that, I couldn't figure out why I got it.

Jim Underwood August 23rd, 2004 03:22 AM

How do I obtain a free "pro" subscription to DV Magazine and Videographer Mag?

Anyone know the web site for Videographer Mag?

Searched google and couldn't find it.

TIA.

Industry magazines

What magazines/newletters do you consider as great reading material?

I try to read American Cinematographer, SHOOT magazine, DV Magazine and Cinefex (for in depth efx stuff).

What do you read as inspiration/helpful material?

Ken Tanaka November 24th, 2004 09:51 PM

What are your specific interests and needs?

Brandon Murphy November 25th, 2004 12:21 AM

I try to obtain a range of material for both the video and film world. A lot of video industry material and some hollywood movie stuff. I am particularly interested in material that leans towards independent video/film making.

Keith Loh November 25th, 2004 12:13 PM

I don't read any technical industry magazines as I'm leaning away from production and more toward development. So for inspriation I read "Film Comment", the film magazine of the Lincoln Center society. For the other fluffy entertainment I can get more by reading online sources.

Allan Phan November 29th, 2004 09:29 AM

Which Videography Magazine do you read?

Hi folks.

I just picked up two recent Videography and Videomaker magazine but can’t decide which one to subscribe to. What video magazine do you read?

Boyd Ostroff November 29th, 2004 09:37 AM

VideoMaker.... isn't that the one which is sort of hobby-oriented? Haven't read it much. I pick up Videography magazine at the newstand from time to time. I think perhaps it's only published quarterly or bi-monthly? My only subscription is to DV magazine.

Patrick Jenkins November 29th, 2004 09:44 AM

FilmMaker

and when it's at the local newsstand, Camcorder & Computer Video

Rick Bravo November 29th, 2004 10:28 AM

Videography, Government Video, Markee, Video Systems, Film & Video, to name a few.

All of these have FREE subscriptions.

I try to look at DV, Videography, Moviemaker, and American Cinematographer once a month. I've got a free subscription to the first two from some thing I signed up for on the internet a long time ago.

Shawn Mielke November 29th, 2004 12:51 PM

I hit many of the website forums and happen to recieve Govt. Video in the mail, but don't buy anything from the newsstands. I do buy the SOC mag, as well as Film Comment, Film Quarterly, and a few others, from time to time. Mostly, I read the many books available on cinematography, editing, favorite filmmakers, documentary filmmaking, that sort of thing.

Dylan Couper November 29th, 2004 02:26 PM

Playboy. Lots to learn about lighting and photography in there.

- DV
- Cinefex
- Post

and, of course ...

B&H Catalogs. :)

Shawn Mielke November 30th, 2004 12:32 AM

B&H catalogs. Right. Of course.

Industry Magazines

I am looking to get a subscription to one or two industry magazines. What I"m really going for is a magazine that spotlites technology but also has step by step guides on different programs, mainly AE and premiere. Do you guys know of anything out there that fits that bill?

Rob Lohman June 21st, 2005 04:19 AM

Which "industry" are you referring to? Because most "professionals" do not
use Premiere but mainly Avid and FCP for example. It sounds like you are
looking for a semi-pro magazine about video production that covers
production, editing and some effects work?

(If so, I can't answer your question. But hopefully someone else can....)

Radek Svoboda June 21st, 2005 05:28 AM

Broadcast Engineering

Video Systems

These are higher end magazines available free online. I admit I read neither.

Christopher C. Murphy June 21st, 2005 06:09 AM

I read tons of industry rags per month, but none come even close to visiting forums like this one right here. The rags usually are behind the forums with information - they do have product reviews before most forums because of their availability to get products before market. But, even so...I've found that tech heads usually find out the basic specs on products early and disect things so much that the rags come out and are just verifying everything.

- Videomaker if you're looking for basic video production knowledge.

- Event DV has become a decent rag.

- Studio (used to be Film and Video I think?) - good rag

Those come to mind because they're on my desk!

Richard Alvarez June 21st, 2005 06:58 AM

"Videography" is mostly the press releases from companies latest products, with a couple of good product reviews tossed in. It's free, go to their website and sign up.

DV magazine has some in depth technical articles, Adam Wilt writes for them, and I respect his reviews. It can also be had for free.

VIDEOGRAPHER is pretty basic, prosumer level advice, might be what you're looking for.

Brian Handler June 21st, 2005 08:07 AM

I'm just looking for something to fill in the gaps when I'm at home on dialup and the forums load to slow for me to handle.

I don't plan on editing on premiere for very long, so I'm looking for something between prosumer and professional. I will be forced to use Avid HD and Newscutters within a year so I might as well get a feel for them.

Thanks for the responses guy.

Anyone have good industry email lists they get stuff from?

Chris Hurd June 21st, 2005 08:59 AM

Our boards load slowly on dialup?

Brian Handler June 21st, 2005 09:33 AM

Everything loads slow on dialup.

I have filtered phone lines so my max con speed is 26k with downstream max rates around 2.5kbs. So yeah.

I spend most my day on t3 so in the evenings I'm pretty SOL

Rob Lohman July 3rd, 2005 04:46 AM

Michael Wisniewski July 4th, 2005 12:44 AM
