In digital, once it's clipped it's generally clipped. There's no 'going into the red' allowed as in analogue days.

You may well flip the switch to attenuate the mic input, but if you're...

You'll love the V1, but you've got to remember you're leaving big 1"/3 chips behind (VX2k1) and going to much smaller 1"/4 in the V1. It's how they can keep a 20x lens of that speed so small, but...

It's really good to read your tests Mike. For years I shot weekly weddings with a pair of VX2ks. As far as image quality goes I could always better it with the DVX100A, but that camera was never as...

It really is a suck-it-and-see situation with converter lenses, but I'm pretty sure the 0.5x will work fine on the JVC. Problem is with such powerful negative elements that they bring with them lots...

Good to see your test footage Ralph and I was most impressed by its lack of barrel distortion. Early on in your test you pan right and the vertical edge of the barn comes into view: dead straight,...

C'mon Tim, I know all that. You say, 'dropouts and data corruption are a serious problem' but I can assure you they're not when I use my Z1 in the HDV mode and feed it many times recycled Sony...

So you film for an hour, capturing sights and sounds galore. You rewind the tape and are ready to transfer the footage. Oddly enough your DV tape doesn't contain any pictures or colours or audio or...

I've often said we make our own good luck in this video game, but Lady Luck sure smiled down on me last weekend. As the guests were tucking into their wedding breakfast I thought I'd set the Z1 up...

I'm thinking you have a PAL PD170, in which case the 16:9 performance is very good. Not quite up to its 4:3, but as it's electronic anamorphic, quite acceptable. Have you tried it out?

If you're...

Yes, the Century 0.65x is a zoom through, so does barrel distort. Not by much, but then if your camcorder's zoom barrel distorts down the wide end (and most do) then the Century will add to that.

Not really Nathan. The manufacturer (Raynox, for instance) designs a lens such as the 6600PRO and sells this with a 43 mm, 52 mm, and a 58 mm attachment thread. The thread he puts on the back bears...

The lens that Canon fit to their HV20 is the cheapest lens they can get away with. This means it has the fewest elements necessary, some of which are plastic (the aspherics) and the widest aperture...

You're on the right track, because what you're discovering is that wide-angles are not about 'getting it all in', they're about using powerful perspective control to force the viewer to see what you...

'the issue of 1/4" vs 1/3" is largely a non-issue.'

I can't agree with you on that one at all Ian, as a recent side-by-side test with the Z1 showed. The differential focus - even allowing for the...

The PAL VX just about gives acceptable 16:9 results. In fact on a big Trinirton Sony TV (4:3) it intercuts very well with Z1 16:9 footage, but that's really because the TV itself is masking down the...

$32 is an amazingly affordable price for a cake, let alone a wide-angle converter. A few points:

You don't say, but I'd suggest the multi-coating isn't. Maybe a single coating on the front...

If the A1 had a bigger side-screen it'd leap ahead in my view. You put it alongside the FX1 (say) and it just looks a bit silly.

But the best thing the A1 has going for it is the much bigger 1"/3...

You don't have to read the manual, just the aperture readout when you switch in the filters.

Camcorders without manually switchable ND filters generally let the lens stop down to f/4 (so only one...

I can't answer your last question, but the XL uses much bigger 1"/3 chips than the XM's 1"/4 chips, so all things being equal it'll be better in the gloom.

Just so that Nick doesn't get confused Marco, 60i isn't the shutter speed set on the camcorder, it indicates that the camera has been set to record 60 half resolution interlaced frames every second.
