The little SD900 astounds me

Every now and then a camcorder comes along that blows the competition into the middle of next week. Years ago (1997) it was the Sony TRV900, a MiniDV palmcorder that was far and away better than...

Re: XDCAM EX1 Or HXR-NX5U NXCAM ??

Some good solid info here and I'd agree with it all - if you can afford it then the EX is a better camera. As so it should be at the price.

But praise where it's due for the NX5. It has a zoom...

Re: Good lens option for DSLR look?

I'm sure Michael meant to say ' ...1/3 inch chip and WILL give much depth of field'. And that's the rub - the Z7 is capable of giving the least dof of practically any 1/3" chipped camcorder simply...

Re: Sony MAY announce on August 24

Never mind the NX5 having an uprated sensor - let's just give it a decent top screen first, shall we? And while we're at it, can we have a font size bigger than the 1mm high icons we have at present?

Re: NX5U & NX5E low light settings

You've already realised what must be done - you've got to light the inside of the car so that there's a realistic balance between the road lit by the headlights and the dash lit by your (dimable,...

Re: The gigantic "which camera should I buy" thread!

Vicky - I'd back Les on this one. The TM (or better value SD) 900 is THE camera to beat - not only at its price point but at price points double its asking price. It is indeed an astoundingly...

Re: 600D vs 60D FCP

Well with the advent of the big-chipped camcorders from Panasonic and Sony your DSLR statement doesn't hold water. It might be time to ditch the 600D plans, sell the XHA1 and pool the money on the...

Re: 600D First Lense

You've nailed it Tariq - and so has Ben. Read his post again and digest every word - especially the first three paragraphs. I shoot weddings on a Sony NX5 and even if I get to the venue a couple of...

Re: DJ altering the tempo of music

You're not alone - I've met this a few times now - with DJs that play CDs as well as MP3s.

Re: Compact HD Camera w/ Big Punch!

The Panasonic SD (or TM) 900 is well worth a look. Read the pupil-dilating reviews on this very site and many others. This 900 is the one to beat. Don't be put off by its low price - its...

Re: Kingston 16 GB Ultimate 266x cards

I'd be worried if this was your only recording medium, but the Z7 can record a backup to HDV tape at the same time, yes? Even so, things ain't right. You've not had this warning with other cards? ...

Re: Color Saturation, Contrast and Sharpness w/NXCAM

The only downside Glen is that the Cinematone2 setting robs you of between a third and a half stop of light. Fine in the great outdoors, but if your back's against the wall in a low light situation...

Re: TM900 and Editing the 50p files

Ah - so maybe my SD900 can't do this trick as it only has on SD card slot and no internal memory like the other two versions of this camera.

Re: TM900 and Editing the 50p files

Perhaps you could talk us through that process Ian because your idea of keeping the 1080/50p footage for future editing while producing 108050i BD is an excellent one.

Re: The Panasonic TM900 Users Thread

Interesting! I didn't realise the 900 used iBLC (intelligent backlight compensation) but of course - with a camera as clever and competent as this, why on earth not? Thanks for the info Peter. But...

Re: The Panasonic TM900 Users Thread

I'm with you Mark. The backlight button adds an arbitrary 1.5 stops or so to the exposure so is like a stopped clock - right only twice in 24 hours. For me the spotlight button (does the 900 have...

Re: XA 10: Wide Angle adaptor vs STD lens

Good answer Robert. In fact Sony sold the PD170 with a wide-converter because its standard zoom's 43mm (equiv) was looking decidedly old fashioned by time it came out. The wide converter made the...

Re: XA 10: Wide Angle adaptor vs STD lens

There's no escaping the laws of nature Robert, and adding an extra three elements in front of your Canon zoom will lower the contrast, lower the sharpness and add to the distortion.

Of course this...

Re: What's your typical wedding video duration?

What a wedding you describe Dave P. What's my plan? As always, film edits are life with the boring bits removed. Now that wouldn't leave much on the DVD in the scenario you describe, so they'd get...

Re: Is it possible to Turn off IA Icon?

Yes, and this is how I often run 'n gun with the little cam. But iA is all sorts of other tweaks like face detection, smile, recognition, contrast control and suchlike. Probably a lot more besides,...

Re: TM900 and Editing the 50p files

I can't help you with your editing dilemma Ian but I'd just like to back you on the 900's amazing capabilities. I too have one of these and just love the LCD screen's touch sensitivity. I take the...

Re: Questions about using HVR-MRC1K with Sony HVR-Z1E

I reckon you must have thought this through Ben, but have you considered selling the Z1 and going 'proper' tapeless (file-based)? You don't say what your 'various reasons' are, but adding flash...

Re: Is it possible to Turn off IA Icon?

iA is all very well, but I wish I could have manual exposure enabled with iA doing everything else. You simply can't shoot movies with auto exposure.

Re: NX5U upgrade?

I've not heard a whisper that the NX5 is about to be superseded. Before this happens the Z5 will disappear, and that hasn't happened yet.

Re: Advice on buying a camcorder for low light

It's news to me that the EX1R is out of production. Go for it - it's the best low-light camera of that form-factor out there.

Piotr (a prolific poster) thinks the FS100 is a bit so-so in low...
