Re: need a b-cam for my 5d: m41, G10 or XA-10?

The XA 10, with the handle off, is essentially a G 10 with 64 GB of on-board storage.
To the best of my knowledge, the controls, functions, menus, etc. are near identical.

Re: Archival SD Footage in 1080p HD Project

When I need to include SD archival footage in an HD project, I always use a smaller than HD framesize- either letterboxed on a black background, or as a PIP over some HD content.
IMO, enlarging 480...

Re: A clue regarding HDMI output?

This is the part that I have never been clear about.
The raw video comes off of the chip, into the DSP, and then out the other side as 4:2:0 AVCHD.
The signal can be recorded to the camera card...

Re: XA10 still have rattling XLR buttons?

IMO, the XA 10 is a unique camera that provides excellent image quality, excellent low light performance, and professional features/controls in a package that is hardly bigger than a "tourist' cam. ...

Re: XA10 still have rattling XLR buttons?

Reports vary.
I got my XA 10 about 6 weeks ago from the Canon web store.
If I shake the detached handle vigorously, I can hear some rattle.
When handle is mounted with a shotgun mic in place, I...

Re: NEX-VG20 in November

The spec for the FMU 128 is that it is a device made specifically for the Sony NX5.
That suggests that it probably will not work on any other cameras.
But there are other back up devices that...

Re: Why only 24mp per second (when the 5n does 28)?

Usually 1920x1080 60p is 28mbs.
I'm suspicious that it is just an omission/typo sort of thing in the spec sheet.
We'll see...

Re: NEX-VG20 in November

IMO, the specs on the VG 20 indicate that Sony is signalling that they are committed to keeping the VG model in their big chip camera line up, and that they intend on keeping it competitive going...

Re: AVCHD Glitch

I've not used the GH2, but both my Sony and Canon AVCHD cameras came with file transfer utilities (Sony PMB, & Canon Transfer Utility) that make the import really bulletproof.
The utilities will...

Re: How to handle AVCHD 720 60p & 1080 30p in post

One nice thing about the Cineform software- it does use the Lanczos algorithm and will resize all of the files that require it, on the fly, during the initial conversion.
You simply set the desired...

Re: XA 10: Wide Angle adaptor vs STD lens

My bad- I failed to mention that I wasn't shooting full WA with either lens.
The entire purpose for shooting this little test was to determine if I needed to remove the adaptor every time I was not...

Re: XA 10: Wide Angle adaptor vs STD lens

For the video, the zoom was deliberately adjusted to attempt to create the same angle of view for both the WA and STD shots.
In order to isolate the image quality/characteristics of the two lenses I...

Re: XA10, G10 vs HV30/40 Comparison?

I think it is a nice look for that sort of content.
A lot of color, a lot of image "pop".
The XA 10 will do it so easily with a little boost to the color sat and the contrast.
And, when you want a...

Re: Best DVD settings

Good advice.
Getting a really high quality DVD is way harder than one would think it should be.
Fortunately, Adobe CS5 has dramatically improved the downscaling & transcode from HD to DVD.
As a...

Re: Best DVD settings

Exactly- you can shoot either 60i or 30p, but for greatest player compatability, the DVD m2t file should be 60i.
Most encoders will convert a 30p original to a 60i PsF DVD file.

In my experience, it seems like the minimum system for PPro 5.x to edit AVCHD and run stable, smooth, & fast is:
Intel i7, 8-12GB RAM, 7200RPM media drive, MPE compatable nVidea CUDA GPU....

Re: Best DVD settings

DVD is generally an interlaced format.
If you are shooting interlaced UFF, you should maintain those parameters all the way to DVD disk.
All DVD players will play both UFF and LFF, but not all will...

Re: How to handle AVCHD 720 60p & 1080 30p in post

Re: XA 10: Wide Angle adaptor vs STD lens

I shoot a lot of travel docs- so, I'm always needing WA shots.
The XA 10 is natively fairly wide (maybe 30mm) and with the addition of the 0.80 adaptor I can get to about the max angle that is just...

Yeah...
I've heard such a variety of opinion about it I decided to try and test it myself.
Once I started I realized that making any valid scientific comparison was going to be way over my head,...

Re: Sell me on Premiere

This truely is the problem.
You can stay with FCP 7- for a while, but eventually you'll need to step into the future.
Otherwise, if you need a full featured Pro NLE, your choices are limited....

XA 10: Wide Angle adaptor vs STD lens

The question: How much downside is there to routinely leaving the Canon WD-H58W wide angle adaptor on the camera??
Here is some comparison footage that sheds a little light on the question:
Please...

Re: external audio for xa10

Not sure exactly what the problem is, but clearly the VideoMic Pro circuitry is not playing well with the XA 10's 3.5mm audio section. I think this sort of thing does happen more often with...

That is certainly the way I do it.
