Bill, what program are you using to encode your footage once it gets out of the Avid? How are you exporting out of Avid? 601 or RGB?

Try trashing your preferences, and also deleting the render files, and waveform/thumbnail caches for that...

Export a "Quicktime Movie" (just use the default settings), and then bring that into Compressor. This will give you the best results possible.

There were reported problems of Compressor crashing...
