Re: What’s a suitable tapeless storage device still available in 2022?

FWIW, I have one of these (it is apparently discontinued) and used it for awhile to connect the component output of a Sony HVR-M15U HDV tape deck to a monitor that only had HDMI. It also converts the...

Re: It was twenty years ago today...

I'm sure you meant well, I just don't think it should have been posted in this thread about the DVinfo 20th anniversary. It would be more appropriate to start a new thread in one of these forums, and...

Re: It was twenty years ago today...

You posted something completely random and off-topic in an unrelated thread on a digital video forum so naturally people are not going to take it seriously. The first thing that came to mind was...

Re: The sticky rubber syndrome.

I have been processing massive amounts of geodata recently and constantly have to do "housecleaning" to keep any free space across my two primary 2tb SSD's. So, this morning I dug out an old 2tb...

Re: The sticky rubber syndrome.

OK, I see. Yeah, I usually only see 70% and 90% at the grocery store. There's also denatured alchohol that you can buy in cans at paint and hardware stores in the US. I always assumed that was 100%...

Re: The sticky rubber syndrome.

Do you really have to "ask your local pharmacist nicely" to get a bottle of alcohol in Australia? When the pandemic began, there was a period of a few months where it was hard to find in the US...

Re: "Tripod Head Tie-Down"

I don't think there's really a conflict here. Based on those B&H Photo products, they are using "tie-down" to refer to the whole mechanism that locks the tripod bowl. So a knob is still a knob... but...

Re: "Tripod Head Tie-Down"

I have had a pulley ratchet just like the one shown above for many years and use it to secure lumber/supplies when transporting them in my SUV. Like I said, I have never heard that term before, but...

Re: "Tripod Head Tie-Down"

Never heard that term before, but apparently it is the mechanism that locks the levelling bowl on better video tripods. Looks like some people replace the original knobs because they aren't...

Re: Audio quality makes all the difference

I always assumed as much, but now it appears that AI-based software can go much farther by actually manufacturing details based on "training" with similar images. Seems like that would be even easier...

Re: Audio quality makes all the difference

Funny, I posted this elsewhere but it's also relevant here. I recently watched "Revenge of the Nerds" which is a fascinating documentary about personal computers from 1996. It also includes footage...

Re: Probably time to uninstall the CD/DVD writing software

It's been a good 10 years since I burned a disk. My daughter has given me some hard-to-find DVD's of things like live concerts as gifts from time to time and I use my old USB DVD drive to rip those...

Re: I'm old enough to remember ...

I recently watched Robert X. Cringely's 1996 "The Triumph of the Nerds" on DocuRama, somehow I must have missed it along the way. Made me think of this thread. Some really terrific computer nostalgia...

Re: Sony EX1 and Final Cut Pro 5 Compatibility

I don't think that is correct. But if you have already purchased FCPX on your old Mac, you won't be able to tell. In that case, it should allow you to re-download your old version. For somebody who...

Re: Sony EX1 and Final Cut Pro 5 Compatibility

If he's still running FCP 5 then that means he must be on a very old version of MacOS (perhaps something like Lion or older, but not newer than High Sierra). Although there were versions of FCPX that...

Re: Sony EX1 and Final Cut Pro 5 Compatibility

Final Cut Pro 5 is some really ancient software, I assume his Mac and version of MacOS is also ancient. I got my EX1 in about 2010 IIRC and used it with Final Cut Pro 6.x. These are all "legacy"...

Why Do DVD's Still Exist?

Made me think about some of the discussions here. Also reminded me of myself - when I moved to my rural home in 2006 there was no cable TV, so I began building a big DVD library. Eventually built a...

Re: Sinclair Spectrum

I got a 16k Apple ][ in 1978, so never had much interest in the Timex Sinclair. But there are javascript-based online emulators for most of these old systems. I found this one for the ZX-81 for...
