Minimum Overdrive - feedback anyone ?
 

Hey. Here's MINIMUM OVERDRIVE, a 13 minute action/comedy I finished a few weeks ago. It's a kind of frenetic car chase...

We did it with absolutely no money and tried to make it as cool as possible so we'd love to have some feedback !

Great job, tons of good shots in there.

Just my opinion but I think it would be twice as good if you cut out all the shots that show the wanted poster and the controller of the car.

That was incredible. Even more so that you pulled it off with no budget.

All the suspense and perfectly choreographed editing worked perfectly. I hope your planning on entering some festivals/competitions with this. It looks like you put alot of time into it.

I wish you luck with further work. It is obvious you have some great talent!

Yeah.

I liked it. A lot.

Because I saw how much work went into it. And because the cutting was so effective. I think perhaps it went a little long, and the joke at the end didn't quite work for me, but given how effectively you used your material, I was really impressed.

(I liked seeing shots of the controller, by the way; it made sense in the style of the comedy.)

Next for me is just some stuff I have to edit... another little film I did on video (a drama this time) and then a small documentary... I'm just trying to keep busy as I wait for answers from festivals...

My thoughts.

Crazy good editing. Excellent work. Some really creative shots in there. You hit all the action cliches perfectly. (loved the american flag neck tie!)

It did seem to drag at times. I was on the edge of my seat until they left the parking garage. The tacks and marbles scene didn't do much for me.

The VWagon chase scene was extremely well done.
You should be working for Bruckheimer.

Very nice work indeed! But definitely too long for my taste. I'd cut
it down in size. Most of the stuff looked excellent, but some scenes
looked a bit out of place (more video-ish)....

I'm quite impressed, from your shot techniques to your editing choices. Contrary to some of the other posts, I actually like the whole sequence. I think the whole piece was top notch. Great job.

Just out of curiosity, how did you manufacture the 'explosions'?

We did the explosions using big ol' firecrackers that we just covered with flour. We then put a little piece of paper on fire next to the firecracker and light the firecracker.

When it blows up, the flour kinda hangs in the air and the little flame sets it on fire, thus giving the fireballs you briefly see in the movie...

Very cool idea. Did you come up with that yourself or did you find it somewhere else? It's a very effective trick, that's for sure.

Also, what software do you use for editing, and what camera did you shoot with?

My actor Thierry Ramoin had done a movie a year before with a Vietnam scene in it and he'd used flour to try and make big old clouds of smoke... And we noticed that from time to time the flour would catch on fire... So I just did the same thing he did except I added a little flame to make sure everything would burst into a small fireball...

And I shot the movie with a Panasonic NV GS 70 camera and edited it on Adobe Premiere 6.0.

Cool. You should be very proud of this project. I definitely enjoyed watching it.
