I would love to see this. Mine got lost. I ordered it on the 5th and was told it shipped on the 7th. Never saw it. I'm now battling with Amazon, whom I purchased it through, for a refund. I paid for the best shipping possible, but even by media mail, it'd only take a week. Sucks for me. I really could have used the knowledge, from what I hear, is a great DVD.

It sounds like their tour of the festivals is going well. Right on for them. Hope the plans for the feature pan out. Looks really creative.

FESTIVAL: Film Festival UPDATE: B R O K E N is an "Official Selection" of the Palm Beach International Film Festival in West Palm Beach, FL.
Founded in 1996, The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) was the brainchild of local business and civic leaders who felt a film festival would offer an exciting cultural venue for the community, be a tremendous fundraiser for film and TV education and would also provide an excellent opportunity to introduce filmmakers to the area's resources. The PBIFF celebrates both the history and the future of the film industry with seven days of world premieres, special events, seminars, feature, short films and documentaries.

In 2003 PBIFF became a "Competitive" Festival; joining the ranks of other great film events such as: Sundance, Cannes, Toronto and Venice. The PBIFF has enjoyed a remarkable level a success to date. While competing with over 1500 similar events, PBIFF has created a special niche within the film industry and is listed as one of the top 25 film festivals in the world. Unlike many festivals around the country, the PBIFF has dedicated itself into making a difference in the lives of young people by helping to fulfill their dreams in the world of film. Proceeds generated each year go to the Palm Beach County Schools to provide new technologies for optimal learning in the form of grants and scholarships.

1. Can someone please explain what the following means: "go for the blow-up to HDCam"

2. Why do festivals want and perfer HDCam vs 16mm?

1. Blow-up is actually a term for going to film, but it's not used as much as "transfer to film" or "film out."

2. First of all, very few festivals play 16mm, they prefer digital or 35mm, best I can tell. Second, having a projectionist, especially if it's a union one, costs a lot of money. Equipment costs also factor in (and not all film festivals screen in movie theatres). To go to HDCAM, it costs around $300 to $500; film outs can cost around $20,000 to $40,000.

Around 60% of films at Sundance are shown digitally, HDCAM.

I didnt realise how long this thread has been going on. I watched your trailer alex, a while ago when you first posted it. And after seeing it I picked my jaw up from the floor and really re-evaluated my position on low budget filmmaking. Just for me alone to see how far your short has taken you really lifts up my spirits on the idea that it CAN happen. I use a dvx1oob, and never knew the camera had the power to give that sort of look (with help from your lighting etc etc). I am going to try to order the DvD today if i can, I just realized you were selling them. Anyway Great work man, really.

Alex gives a COMPLETE rundown on how to make an indie movie look good. My tips, which seem universal: use a good camera, a great DP, get some good G&E (grip and electric), if you can afford a gaffer get one, and edit/color correct accordingly in post.

I can't stress the DP part--shooting my movies and trying to direct was always disastrous.

To Alex and BROKEN crew-
I recieved my DVD in just about a week after ordering. Great job! I loved the DVD extras, I have already implemented a few ideas for my upcoming production.

A couple of quick questions for ya:
How long was your production process, specificly from the time script was completed to the last minute editing right before your trip to Sundance?

Also, how long was your preproduction time (rehersals and test shooting/editing)?
