Gay For Johnny Depp

Hi All

I shot this last weekend and cut it in 2 days.

Its an ultra low budget video for the band Gay for Johnny depp.

We made it for 150 bucks....

It certainly has its moments...

Comments?

I'm at work. They're ain't no way I'm clicking a link like that. It'll probably set off alarms in some office somewhere! :)

Jake Hensberry July 19th, 2005 01:43 PM

I assure you chris, despite the name...its safe to watch.

Chris Davis July 19th, 2005 02:34 PM

I'm sure it's safe, I just think the name might stand out in our office internet access log. Just kidding anyway, I'll check it out later.

Matt Champagne July 19th, 2005 03:35 PM

Was fairly cool...an interesting lighting concept I suppose. I think the singer should have wore something other than jeans and that weird belt...that sorta seemed out of place given the tone of the rest of the video. Also, him drinking a beer may give you a ton of trouble placing that video on any american tv channels...I'm pretty sure it is illegal based off of some obscure law to show any consumption of alcohol on television...just look at the beer commercials...no one ever drinks they just hold beers and have wacky adventures.

Joshua Provost July 19th, 2005 04:55 PM

That may be the single best music video I have ever seen. Woah!

I'm curious. Just how many music videos have you seen, Joshua?

Jay

Jake Hensberry July 20th, 2005 07:33 AM

Let me re-state guys, I made this for $150 dollars. MTV play is pretty much outta the question and we knew that before shooting. Its for the web only in the US but is going to air, belive it or not, in England.

Joshua, THANKS! I know you're kidding but thanks!

Jay, be nice. It was done for fun, for godsake....but thanks for the comment anyway.

Chris Davis July 20th, 2005 08:35 AM

I especially like the tearing of the Barney Fife photo a la Sinead O'Connor. Was that your idea? Good stuff for 150 bucks.

Joshua Provost July 20th, 2005 10:04 AM

I've seen a lot of music videos, I own a record label. I mean it, this one kept me on the edge, very surprising.

Ash Greyson July 20th, 2005 11:22 AM

I guess I am confused, not to bash it but it looks like something a random high school kid shot on the fly. When you dont have a budget, get creative, not just with ideas but with camera work and editing. I have done 2 videos on budgets of even less than $150. Neither was great but they were interesting, one was actually #1 on MTV-Europe and MTV-Latin... go figure....

ash =o)

George Su July 20th, 2005 11:46 AM

i think its supposed to look like it was shot on the fly. i dunno. what video did you have on mtv europe? i'd like to see wat else can be done for 150 bucks.

Jake Hensberry July 20th, 2005 12:19 PM

Hi Ash, not to bash you either, but if you want to go throwing around comments about some supposed master peice you did for less the 150 bucks, I'd LOVE to see it and we can compare accordingly. You can't really say "Hey, I've done better then that for $150 and not show us the money.

I'm not doubting you, but there has to be proof in the pudding. For example, for three hundred dollars, I did a video that was #1 on MTV Japan for 2 months, veiwable via my website which is linked to my porofile. It's for Cue The Pulse to Begin by Burnside Project.

And you're also right, it's SUPPOSED to look cheap and stupid. We lit it with ONE on board light. Its part of the humor of the whole thing, like a low budget slasher film....

Post a link to your $150 dollar videos. I'd be really intrested to see them....

Thanks for commenting!

Meryem Ersoz July 20th, 2005 12:31 PM

how can you take a parodic video by a group named "gay for johnny depp" too seriously?? i thought it was kinda funny and silly....

p.s. jake--don't take the comments too seriously, either, a lot of campy humor misses its mark....

Jake Hensberry July 20th, 2005 12:32 PM

Go for you, Meryem. I think you understand EXACTLY what we were going for.

George Su July 20th, 2005 12:38 PM

hell yeah, i'm gay for jake hensberry!

Jake Hensberry July 20th, 2005 12:39 PM

I'm gay for you too George!

Cody Dulock July 20th, 2005 09:57 PM

the good ol' 1 light shoot. suprisingly enough, it worked for this. it was a weird, somehwat disturbing, video... im sure the trend will catch on sooner or later (a few years from now some new wave screemo band will replicate your video style and it will be on mtv...). but then again who knows... either way, it was entertaining and told a story that probably matches what the lyrics in the song are about. in your/the bands artistic eye, its what you or the band wanted the video to be.

keep it cool in the motor pool.

Jake Hensberry July 21st, 2005 08:48 AM

Thanks Cody. Looks like you totally got the idea as well! These comments make it all worth while out here in Gayville!

Thanks Again!

Ash Greyson July 21st, 2005 09:17 AM

Well, I dont get that genre in general, I didnt see the humor in it (besides the band name) If you were going for funny, I would have made it lighter, having body parts fall off or zombies come in, etc. I did the video "Save Me" for literally nothing, which you can watch here:

http://au.search.launch.yahoo.com/mf...deo&id=2152002

The other video I did for almost no money played in Europe but never did much. My friend is the guitar player and called me on a Saturday morning and said they were shooting a video and wanted me to do it, no prep, no nothing. One day of running around shooting, 2 days of editing and off to their label.

http://www.admiraltwin.com/attv2.html

I dont think either is great, but given the constraints, decent...

Jake Hensberry July 21st, 2005 09:43 AM

Hey there Ash!

Thanks for posting these links!

I think this one:

http://www.admiraltwin.com/attv2.html

was actually pretty good. Didn't like the song, clever post tricks though...

The Hanson video... ummm, whats creative about putting an after effects filter over some live footage? If that's whats considerd creative these days, we're all in trouble.

Zombies and body parts falling off....hummm a completely literal appraoch. And for 150 bucks, I suppose it would have been easy to call in a and pay an FX artist to do this?

For my tast, these videos are not GAY enough. There's something to be said for videos that are a little GAY, nes' pa?

Thanks again for your comments!

Ash Greyson July 21st, 2005 10:08 AM

I agree about "Save Me" in 2005 but that was done in 2000 before that effect was actually a built in effect. That video was done by exporting every single frame into photoshop as a filmstrip. Every single frame required several effects, negative, color contrast, graphic pencil, in specific order, then re-import into Premiere.

It was done on a 650mhz laptop. I was very open with my settings and several people created plug-ins based on those settings, there was a couple internet sites that did stories on it. In 2005, most people have a computer fast enough and the plug-ins are available to do the same effect in a few hours. The only part I still think looks cool is the colorized part....

Ash Greyson July 21st, 2005 10:09 AM

Also, if you see my original post, I never said they were "masterpieces" just that they were "interesting" =o)

Steven Gotz July 21st, 2005 10:13 AM

The "music" and the lyrics were not to my taste, any more than the rest of the images, but they were pretty well shot. I imagine that if I liked the band, I would have been pretty happy with the video.

I didn't notice the editing while watching it, so that is a good thing.

I'm with George Su or whoever said people don't "get" campy humor very often. I also thought the above quoted comment was great on multiple levels. And I ain't gay!

The intro bit where it said UN PRODUCTION TOTALMENT GAI is even funnier in French so hopefully it won't lose anything being played on a continent where a lot more people do speak French.

Kudos from a hetero fan! Keep it up!

Cory Cone July 21st, 2005 12:36 PM

I loved the Laura Palmer picture getting held up by the one guy. Good old Lynch.

Jake Hensberry July 21st, 2005 03:08 PM

Hi Ash!

Okay, first you said:

So what exactly is the real story here? ;)

All you have to do when you watch a video by a band called Gay For Johnny Depp is sit back and go "Ha ha ha, that was stupid and funny." A running critque of it really isn't nessessary.

I'd like to quote anothe DVinfo member with a truly wise eye and obvioulsy impeccable taste:

This has been truly educational for me everyone. Thanks for all the support from the light harted folks out there who appreciate a good bloody laugh!

Ash Greyson July 21st, 2005 04:14 PM

The "Save Me" video was #1 on MTV Europe and MTV Latin. The Admiral Twin video didnt do much, I believe it showed in Germany for a while.

You asked for commernts, not for people to sit back and go "ha ha, gay for Johnny Depp..."

I love campy stuff but I just dont think this is that funny. Not over the top enough, maybe you should have had one of the band members take a bite out of another... Actually, the tone is quite ambiguos between the title and the Barney picture. If you were going for that slasher style, I would have bumped up the shutter or something to make it more interesting. Definitely woudl have gone with a warmer white balance.

George Su July 21st, 2005 04:19 PM

i'd be gay for hanson too.

Jake Hensberry July 21st, 2005 06:34 PM

I'm gay for Hanson too! And GAY for George Su! And GAY for Ash Greyson! I'm also GAY for long shutter speeds! And GAY for warmer white balence!

Let's keep it GAY!!

Bill Porter July 22nd, 2005 06:58 AM

Oui, totalment gai.

John Hudson July 23rd, 2005 12:35 PM

I'm now officially gay for Rob Zombie as a filmmaker (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I am not Gay for Hanson although I think at least one of them may be literally Gay or should be (again not that theres anything wrong with that)

I thought this Video was fun. For a $150.00 I thought you did a fine job. I enjoyed it; the bondage type atmosphere, the blood, the stilettos, The Twin Peaks homage. Every looked like they were having fun. I personally liked the minimilist lighting used and preferred the washed out colder vibe you had going. Was I laughing hysterically? No. But I was digging it.

In contrast; I did watch the Hanson SAVE ME video and found nothing original or exciting about it. Just performance footage with some generic effect applied (Doesnt really matter if its hand drawn does it?). I found this boring beyond boring. Not to mention the song sucks anyway.

Jake Hensberry July 25th, 2005 07:52 AM

Rock on Mr. Hudson! You are now not only in the DVinfo inner circle, but GAY inner circle as well! And that my friend is a true achivement!!

Totalament gai!

Gilles Guerraz July 25th, 2005 08:33 AM

Hi Jake, I liked your video's lightning and editing.

And by the way guys, the right way to write it is "totalement gai" ;-)

John Hudson July 25th, 2005 12:26 PM

Bon excusez-moi!

:)

Travis Maynard July 26th, 2005 02:26 AM

God...you guys are so gay.

Gay gay gay...

Bill Porter July 26th, 2005 02:44 AM

Oui, totalement gai.

Ash Greyson August 1st, 2005 05:33 PM

Gay-a-palooza... Let me say one last time that the effect on "Save Me" was not at all generic at the time, each frame had to have multiple effects to make it look sketched. Nowadays, it is indeed generic. Like I said before, the only part I still really like is the colorized stuff in the bridge...

Siempre mui taco, los flautas infragante mui tostada GAY!
