Loop

Hi,

I'm pleased to show my 2nd short movie.
It is called "Loop", and was shot in Paris, FRANCE, during winter 2005.

The story is about Claire a Remi. They love each other, but are somehow frightened by "the test of time". So they are looking for a way to renew themselves. A way to become what they are not...

The video was shot with a JVC GY DV300 camcorder (similar to Sony PD-150). Sound was recorded with an AT897.
The budget is around 50 dollars.
35$ for a 2 weeks wheelchair renting.
the rest is DV tapes, and some biers after the shooting :p

We wrote, shot and edit it in 3 months, which was very short to manage to do what I had in mind in the first place.

I've encodes two versions of the video :

http://gilz99.free.fr/Loop/Loop_sub.wmv

for PC users. Video size is big, but blacks tend to be a little bit grey. Please lower your screen brightness

And a QT version for Mac users and Winodws media Players fiends

http://gilz99.free.fr/Loop/Loop_HQ.mov

Video is smaller ( 360x288 ) but blacks look the way they should.

Dialogues are in french, but the video is subtitled in english.

Well, I think that's it !

Jay Gladwell July 23rd, 2005 01:28 PM

Gilles, that was well done! I enjoyed watching that. It was one of the better ones I've seen here.

Jay

Gilles Guerraz July 23rd, 2005 04:12 PM

Hi Cody, Hi Jay, thanks for your comments ;)

Steven Gotz July 23rd, 2005 05:18 PM

It was very well done. I enjoyed it too.

Gilles Guerraz July 23rd, 2005 05:19 PM

Thank you Steven ;)

Ahmet Ilhan July 25th, 2005 02:31 AM

what a script? it describes one of the most important aspects of relationships. constant need for change while staying the same person. as if like a part of every men's life. I even feel enlightened. :)

and i dont need to say anything for the rest of the film. just perfect

thank you for sharing

Gilles Guerraz July 25th, 2005 02:38 AM

Thank you Ahmet ;)

Jake Hensberry July 25th, 2005 08:09 AM

Gilles Guerraz July 25th, 2005 08:19 AM

Thanks Jake ! ;)

Patrick King July 25th, 2005 08:25 AM

Gilles,

I didn't get it until the second lap, then I thought it was a great concept and very well done. Thank you for sharing it, you should be proud! I'd love to watch again if you every expand it to be "what I had in mind in the first place". You're quite talented.

Gilles Guerraz July 25th, 2005 08:38 AM

Thank you Patrick for your comment.

It makes me happy that you've watched the video twice ;)

Gilles, I did watch it twice, but by the second lap I meant the actor's second lap around the building.

Gilles Guerraz July 25th, 2005 09:18 AM

oops, sorry for the misunderstanding ;-)

Actually, Vincent (who plays Remi) has such a different face with the hat and the glasses on his face that many people think the actor is not the same.

Steven Gotz July 25th, 2005 09:22 AM

It took me at least two laps to catch on - maybe more. The second and third times I watched it, it made more and more sense. Well layered and very interesting concept.

Gilles Guerraz July 25th, 2005 04:33 PM

Thank you Steven for posting here ;)

Kevin Kwak August 1st, 2005 01:12 AM

Hi, both of the links are dead as of now.

Gilles Guerraz August 1st, 2005 03:50 AM

Hi Kevin,

yeah I do have technical problems with my FTP. I hope it will, be back to normal soon... :-(

Eniola Akintoye August 4th, 2005 12:13 AM

Well, I guess it is still not back yet because I am getting errors.

Jay Gladwell August 4th, 2005 06:55 AM

Gilles, if you can get me a copy of the video, I'll host it on my site.

Jay

Downloading.
Thanks.

Gilles Guerraz August 6th, 2005 03:40 PM

Thank you Mike for the kind words.

Any feedback Kevin ? ;)

Kevin Kwak August 6th, 2005 04:32 PM

Of course Gilles, it was fantastic!
The short film was flawless....thumbs up man.

I didn't understand the ending. I'll PM you so that you don't have to spoil the storyline for others.

Edit- PM feature is not available here on board. But I think I understand the story after reading other member's post.

Gilles Guerraz August 6th, 2005 05:11 PM

Thanks ! :-)

As for me, I don't think it is flawless.

Otherwise, I'd sit on my butt for the rest of my life, never trying to do something better ;-)

I'm not 100% satisfied with the scenario which is not clear enough for me. I've worked on it with a writer.
We had many different ideas. I don't think we've succeeded in merging them in the best way possible.

Besides, there are lots of lightning issues. sunlight changes a lot, some plans have been shooted in the afternoon, others in the morning. It can easily be seen in the video.

There are some sound issues too. Especially in the outside scenes.

I'll try to work on that on my next projects. ;-)

Mike Teutsch August 6th, 2005 05:33 PM

Gilles,

Just about everyone is most critical of their own work. That’s normal. Very good anyway.

Bill Porter August 7th, 2005 10:24 AM

Wow!

Great camera angles, great acting, a very nice script, and very nice post processing work.

What did you use for the special effects, and what other softwares did you use for color timing and so on?

Great job, keep it up!

Gilles Guerraz August 7th, 2005 04:31 PM

Thank you very much Bill !

SFX have been made with After Effects 6.5, color correction with Adobe Premiere Pro.

By the way, what do you call "color timing" ?

Gilles Guerraz September 3rd, 2005 04:35 AM

Hello,

I had another issue with my provider, and have to modify URLs.

Here are the new links (by the way, I still cant' find how to edit a post here...)

By 'color timing' I meant color correction... there is a difference but not everyone uses the words correctly, myself included, LOL

I have the same problem - sometimes I can edit a post, sometimes I can't; No idea why.

There is a time limit. After a predetermined time, I don't how long/short it is, you no longer have the ability to edit your posts. Some forums have no set time limit. This one does.

"If you have registered, you will be able to edit and delete your posts. Note that the administrator can disable this ability as he desires. Your ability to edit your posts may also be time-limited, depending on how the administrator has set up the forum."

Hey Gilles,

Fantastic film man, the production value is phenomenal!

If you'd like I'll happily host both versions of the film on my website here:

http://www.mediaspine.com

Its a website dedicated to short films, animation, games and all the rest, a bit like TriggerStreet but without the advertising, and a little more scope. Eventually I'm going to get round to implementing a rating system and then some online and offline festivals, but for now its simply a showcase website.

Let me know if you want me to host it there, and I'll download the files, upload them to the site and do the rest!

Gilles Guerraz September 3rd, 2005 04:41 PM

Hi guys, thanks for the informations and the kind words ;-)

Yeah Andrew, it would be great to have my short published on Mediaspine.
Your website looks pretty cool and interesting.
It's now in my favorites ;)

Should I do something to have my short published on the site or do you take care of it by yourself ?

Andrew Wills September 4th, 2005 04:19 AM

Nope, I can take care of the rest!

Once I can find a new host server, I have written a PHP script allowing users to upload their films directly to the site, but unfortunately my current host only allows 2mb PHP uploads, so I have to place the films on the site manually.

I shall have it up by the end of the day!

Gilles Guerraz September 4th, 2005 09:37 AM

Pretty cool !

I'll check it out tonight or tomorrow.

;)

Andrew Wills September 5th, 2005 05:03 AM

There up and running!

Here's a re-compressed Quicktime version of the film (12mb):
http://www.mediaspine.com/film/loop.php

And here's the original WMV file (70mb):
http://www.mediaspine.com/film/loop_sub.wmv

If anyone else wants their film showcased on MediaSpine just email me the file or a link at: submit@mediaspine.com

Gilles Guerraz September 6th, 2005 02:59 AM

Thanks Andrew ! ;-)
