Siren's Song

Been playing around with some video for an old song by my original band back in the day. This is called Siren's Song and it's from our second CD, which didn't have much exposure at the time. So maybe we can get it a bit more viewership.

Oh, maaate, that's got a solid classic Aussie rock band feel to it. Just can't quite put my finger on it, but yeah.

My only suggestion would be to have a mix where the vocals are more prominent.

It's good stuff.

Far too late for anything like that, the song is about 25 years old, first recorded in 1996. :)
I used to have the original master tapes, but what with moving all around the place in the last 25 years, they seem to have gone by the wayside, which is a shame...

Thanks for watching, though. Most appreciated.

Technology is amazing, though. You can now re-mix from a finished track and I have a copy of this software.

See https://www.izotope.com/en/products/...rebalance.html

I've played with a few of the iZotope products over the years, but I must admit I've not taken a look at this one.

It's weird, a lot of people have complained in the past that the vocals on a lot of our tracks are hard to make out, but my harshest critic, my mother, said that this was the first one that she could clearly hear the vocals! Guess it depends on the equipment. :)

Nice suggestion, though, but I think that the time has passed for giving it any kind of makeover... :)

If you can update your profile with an email address, I would have been able contact you and asked if you had an original .wav handy and given it a go for you. Or shoot me an email via my profile here.

Andrew

PS. And who are we to argue with your mum! LOL. :-)

If you really want, you can download the original wav file from Soundcloud.

Don't go too crazy and spend much time on it though. Would be interesting to see/hear the results, but I wouldn't want you to waste too much time on it.

How's this? Vocals have been given a 4dB boost compared to the rest of the mix. (This is an unlisted YouTube version purely for demoing here.)

Yeah, I can see where it's come up a notch in volume compared to the original.

I think, though, that it's maybe lost a bit of bottom end and seems to have a very prominent high end. Is that a function of the software, or the nature of any artefacts that come into it through the processing?

Not sure, I think I've been listening to the song in a certain way for 25 years, so maybe if it was the first time hearing it, I wouldn't notice anything different...

I might have to see if I can discover a 'source' for the software and see what the possibilities are.

Thanks for your efforts.

Impossible for me to know re the tonality of the vocals that have been enhanced as I don't know what the vocals themselves are truly like. There is a "separation" slider that I didn't mess with. All I had for evaluating with was my ears going "yeah, that's better" as the itch for a more easily discernible vocal was solved.

Well, ears are about the only thing you can use :)

It's weird, my daughter said it was a bit dodgy, but she was on her phone. My ex-wife (who was originally in the band) said she didn't notice anything, and she was on her notebook with headphones. My son said it was hard to hear the vocals, and he's a picky bugger, all he complains about is the drumming, being a drummer himself. My youngest daughter wants to get rid of the vocals completely! :)

I think it all depends on the equipment. Coming through my headphones through my audio input box, doesn't seem to be a problem, but I know we had a lot of trouble with people on other tracks on both our CDs, but the studio engineer was adamant that it wasn't an issue.... dunno. :)

I did the listening on my Rode headphones and the difficulty in hearing the vocals was bugging me but is now no longer there. Glad the ex-wife is still talking to you ... or was that from comments back at the time?

I notice it's a very full and saturated sound in the mix. Anyway, I'm glad you have a decent studio recording. It was fun to give the software a spin on this one, and you should be able to get your hands on a trial version of RX 10 Advanced.
