Beautiful pics, Hannes. I thoroughly enjoyed them. Congratulations also on the authentic clothing. Very interesting.

Good luck with the shooting.

my car security commercial

This is something we shot and edited in about 4 or 5 hours one boring summer day. Check it out, and give me a ring if any of you guys are interested in our security service ;D.

small version (1.8 megs)

large version (6.1 megs)

right click either and "save target as" -- encoded with divx 5

Curtis T. Stoeber July 25th, 2003 07:45 PM

I like the idea. Would have liked to see some more violence though. You can never have enough violence... people eat it up. :)

Anyway there seems to be a lot of headroom on both the top and bottom of the screen that could be done away with. Letterboxing it might have helped. Check out this hack job I did really quick to give you an idea:

Click here to see the JPEG

What I did was pan the original image down a bit and then letterbox it. Composition and framing are really important when you want to direct the viewer's attention to something. I found myself looking at the street, mostly. Live and learn! :)

Alex Knappenberger July 25th, 2003 08:08 PM

Yeah, I liked the idea too, it was catchy and funny, more voilence would be good, heh.

Was it really shot on a XL1 though? Don't take this the wrong way, but it looks pretty bad if it was. The whole car was pretty much blown out, the sky was unusually dark, and it was pretty noisey, it wasn't the compression either. :D

For future use, you should of either:

1. Had a different (darker) color car.

2. Took the exposure down a bit.

3. Found a different location/shot it when the light source (sun) was in a better position, such as early morning or late evening.

Charlie Tran July 26th, 2003 01:18 AM

nope, it was shot with a sony dcr110 handheld dv cam on a mini tripod. i was pretty pleased that it came out only as bad as it did :D

yeah, i see the exposure probs the more that i watch it as well. mental note duely taken :|

thanks for the feedback/advice! love this forum

Alex Taylor July 26th, 2003 01:44 AM

That's great! It's wonderfully simple and pretty damn funny too. It has all the right ingredients to be a real commercial.

Josh Frye July 26th, 2003 10:21 AM

Great concept. Do agree with Alex on the exposure/quality issues. Keep up the good work.

The Egg Incident

Here is something we did for fun over two years ago. This is an attempt at random comedy.

Click here to download 31.3 MB Quicktime

I am aware of the overexposure, unsteady camera, dirty lens. But hopefully you'll be entertained by this all the same.

Keith Loh July 26th, 2003 12:42 PM

Cute. :)

Curtis T. Stoeber July 26th, 2003 08:49 PM

I was wondering if people who download this on a broadband (anything better than dialup, actually) could, in addition to whatever they think about the Quicktime file, tell me what kind of average speeds they were getting for the download and if that comes close to your top-rated speed. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Keith Loh July 27th, 2003 01:09 AM

105kb/sec on a DSL. Got it in less than five minutes. My bandwidth really fluctuates so I can't tell if that is good or not.

Alex Taylor July 27th, 2003 01:19 AM

Haha that was funny.

Mine spiked at 120k/sec at the start, then slowly went down to around 70-90.

Locus et la Machine - Short film

Hello all DVi and DV enthusiasts! I just finished doing the subtitles for a short film my team and I made back in may for school. It took us maybe 70 hours. We made it in one week.

It's called "Locus et la Machine"

Shot with Panasonic AG-DVX100 NTSC

I like the opening shot, very nice!

Is the flickering in the prison scene editing or was it flickering light? It creates an interesting effect but it's tad overdone IMO.

I love that one shot in the bathroom when he's looking in the mirror and those two guys start fighting. Good eye!

There's a humming in the court scenes, was that an air conditioner or something?

Your composition is great the whole way through. Well done!

Kevin Boucher July 27th, 2003 07:37 PM

<<<-- Originally posted by Alex Taylor : I like the opening shot, very nice!-->>>

Thanks alot! Even though it looks warm, it was shot on a freezing may mourning :)

That was a flickering light.

Thanks :) With the AG-DVX100, it's easy to pull a focus changing shot because it is numerised. You look at your point A and memorize the number then look at point B and memorize it's number... then all you have to do is change from one number to the other.

<<<-- There's a humming in the court scenes, was that an air conditioner or something?-->>>

Unfortunatly, we borrowed the city court for one after noon and we weren't well enough equipped for the audio. You've guessed right, the humming is the air conditioner.

<<<-- Your composition is great the whole way through. Well done! -->>>

I'm glad that you took the time to watch it and enjoyed it! Although the quality of the video on a tv screen is a thousand times better, the story and some shots can be enjoyed on the internet :)

Thanks again, Alex, for your comments and suggestions :) It's good to have critiques around to give advice and opinions so that our movies can get better.

Matt Stahley July 29th, 2003 11:19 AM

More than likely it was shot on a VX-1000. this is still the workhorse camera for the skateboarding videos. Also if you go the the Girl Skateboards site you will see a few pix of the 1000 in action etc.

Adrian Douglas July 29th, 2003 07:57 PM

Yeah, I can tell you from experience, shooting skateboarding with an XL1 is a difficult task. The VX1000/2000 and GL1/2 are usually used with either a WA or Fisheye adapter slung on the front.

Billy McPherson July 29th, 2003 08:33 PM

I got a 404 on that URL.

Alex Knappenberger July 29th, 2003 08:42 PM

Yeah, that site went down, they probably got hit hard, you didn't even have to sign up to host a picture, just hit a button and it was on a server, heh.

Anyway, here I uploaded it somewhere else:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...8/Image513.jpg

The chroma keyed skateboards in that video were shot on film, probably 8mm, but there was some 35mm in the intro of that video.

Yeah, the VX2000, GL2, VX1000....etc are pretty much standard for skateboard shooting.

Bored Alex, episode 1, haha.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-.../boredalex.jpg

Eh, don't use this terrible peice to judge my capabilities, heh. I was bored the other night and decided to do something to help with my boredem, and this is the result, it took about 10 minutes to "shoot" (be dumb) and like a hour for me to edit. Most likely if/when I do a public access show, the "bored alex" series will become a regular, heh.

I don't know how well this uber-stupidness will go with the "older" crowd, but I know my stupid little friends seem to love this stuff. Such replies from them as "omg rofl" "hahaha" "dude i luv ur movieZ!"...etc...etc

(Right click > Save target as|8.5MB WMV8)

Sorry about the FTP, the guy that hosts stuff for me is gone, my ftp isn't all that slow though, about 50kb/s max, depending on your connection/where you are.

Oh yeah, I finally turned 15 today, well yesterday now.

I wish you a happy recovery Alex. ; )

The Dental Assistant

This is a short film I just completed. I put it online for a short time to show around and get some feedback. It's about a woman who falls in love with a man with less than perfect hygeine. I'd thought I'd share it here since previous to becoming a fan of mini-DV, I did everthing in film.

This isn't quite the final cut (what ever cut is the final cut).
3 Things are left to do.

a. Color correction
b. Pending rights on the music
c. Running it all thru Magic Bullet

Be Brutal.

Here is the site for it:

If you want to skip all the data about the film you can directly download it with this link (Quicktime - 18Megs)

The Glove (digital short film)

Hi all,

Been a long-time visitor to the DV Community and wanted to share this short that I worked the visual effects for (hopefully I'm posting in the correct area)

"The Glove" (11mins)
http://www.ifilm.com/filmdetail?ifilmid=2473802&cch=

Just a little background....
- We used 2 XL1 cams and 1 GL2 (just for one pickup shot..)
- Crew was about 12 people, 4 actors (all unpaid)
- Budget was about $4,500 (mostly for food, locations)
- Total production time (from pre-production to final DVD pressing) was about 15 months.
- About 7 days of shooting (including setup, tear-down, green-screen shots)
- Combustion 2 was used for majority of visual effects (there were over 35+ FX shots)
- Editing on Premiere
- We had an EXCELLENT gaffer that really made our film look better than it should.
- No post effects were added to footage (some scenes were color corrected however)
- This was our first short film.

I'd appreciate any comments/questions on the short. Links to the visual effects are below as well as the official web site. The only thing I can't really answer are camera settings and lighting questions (since I wasn't in charge of those areas) however on our XL1's we used the 3X wide angle lens, 16x IS II lens and the 16X manual zoom lens (for our one focus pull shot).

Alex Knappenberger August 4th, 2003 02:01 PM

HAHAAHAHAHA, that was awesome dude.

Not only was the shooting/editing excellent, but I loved the story, overclocking and gaming, heh, I do plenty of both.

The guy who did the lighting did a amazing job from what I can see, so was everything else, from the acting to the camera movements, the visual effects were great too.

Great stuff.

Stewart McDonald August 4th, 2003 02:44 PM

Excellent stuff. The lighting was superb. Looked like film rather than DV. Thumbs up!

John Threat August 5th, 2003 08:37 AM

I wished for a moment that I could go back in time and erase this message, but I'll live with it standing as a test to humility.

One take Music Video

Hey guys...

I worked on this video with director Gi young Rhee and it has just been posted.

http://www.eassemblyline.net/01/music%20videos.html#

We shot using three cameras.... XL1 shooting in "frame mode," DVX shooting in 24p normal, and the VX2000 shootin in normal interlace. The set-up for this video was intense so the entire body of this video was shot in one take. The main character was covered in wax and had tubes connected to his body with a latex vest type thing. He had to peel it off during the song so multiple takes were not possible. This was shot for a contest so it gave the director a chance to be a bit more experimental. The video is not for everyone, but I think it turned out quite well and is very interesting.

Some behind the scenes pics can be seen here:

http://www.eassemblyline.net/01/emergestills.html

Becuase of the extremely fast cutting, this video didnt make it through the encode very well. But its good enough to check out so let me know what you all think.

I have a video in post right now that i directed and it was shot on the new SDX900 (I know people have been dying to see some footage from this new camera), it will be posted soon.

-Emery

K. Forman August 9th, 2003 02:14 PM

Kind of neat, yet kind of disturbing... It looked good, especially with the different cameras and different modes.
