V1 Picture profiles for movie Yes / No
What picture profile settings would you use for shooting a movie.
(The movie is a dramatic piece about dealing with rape.) Here is my thought process tell me what you think. At first I thought I would play with the settings in Cinema to get the look I want and just go with that. But then I got to thinking maybe I should just shoot it as clean as I can and do the looks in post. Can you guys tell me your thoughts on this subject. |
I learned a lot about this from following the discussions over in the JVC GY-HD100 section. (Yes, I do shoot a Sony V1!) In particular, Paolo Ciccone's postings on preserving maximum gamut in camera recordings were very helpful. Search is your friend on this one.
In essence, this method boils down to recording the maximum tonal range the camera is capable of, without crushing blacks or clipping whites. Black stretch is frequently used. This results in an in-camera recording that looks a bit flat and low contrast, but has the most flexibility to support post color correction to many different looks. The V1's histogram is a very handy tool for checking black crush and white clip.
