Shooting moving vehicles at night.

What settings should I be using on my Sony FX7 to shoot moving vehicles at night?
I want to increase the brightness but I dont want to lose sharpness. :S

Cheers Sam

At night your FX7 will not be your friend. Depending on the ambient lighting, you may have to gain up as much as 12db. Then the noise and movement will tax the HDV codec resulting in blocky artifacts. The only way to increase sensitivity is to lower the shutter speed, resulting in less smooth movement (less frames may work as a special effect). If you lock the camera down on tripod and let the vehicles move through the frame, you'll fare better. The FX7 and V1 are great when there is sufficient lighting. Best of luck.

This would be a good application for a "B" camera - one of the current (XR500/520 CX500/520) or upcoming (XR/CX550V) cameras, which are far better in difficult light than the FX7.

For my car "night shoots" I tried to go out on a Full Moon...
It makes a surprising amount of difference.
