Comparison of FX7 / FX1
38 picture from native FX1/7 HDV stream (capture with VCL Mediaplayer) in my german blog:
http://www.fxsupport.de/12.html |
Excellent, systematic scene by scene comparison, Wolfgang -- very helpful. To my eyes, the FX7 is sharper and displays greater dynamic range.
Vielen Dank |
I totally agree !
this is a super-useful adn very well-done comparison. It is easy tog et a good feel for how the two cams compare and i have to say the FX7 appears a better image in almost all of those comparison photos. I think the night shots are particularly stunning in how the FX7 has much less artefacts and texturing. Wolfgang you are performing a very valuable service - thanks again. |
These captures have been upscaled to 1934 x 1088, which is a logical thing to make them display with the correct aspect ratio. For comparative analysis between the two cams it makes no difference, but neither looks as good as if the picture was instead downsampled to 1440 x 810.

May I add my thanks. A really good comparison article.
These images shown what Steve Mullen has been sayig about Sony having moved away from the "cool" look. The FX7 images are "warmer" while retaining a natural look and not going overly warm. Looking forward to the video clips. Wolfgang, do you have any clips showing a more shallow depth of field i.e. on a long zoom. Personally I'd like to see how the Sony bokeh compares to Canon's. Still a flip of the coin between the V1 and the XH-A1 for me. Blighmy it's going to be a tough call. |

http://www.fxsupport.de/pic/06/11/29/teleAfx7.jpg this is FX7 full 20 Zoom. |
Hi Wolfgang
Believe me, I saw ALL your images you posted. But I wondered if you had something that showed an object/person in the foreground and close to the camera with the background well out of focus. You'd need to be on a bit of zoom with the aperture as wide open as possible to accomplish this probably. The Canons are showing some beautiful bokeh and I'd just like to see what the Sony can do. I am sure other people would be interested too. cheers TT |
o.k. a making new FX7 pictures with full zoom and F1.6
this pictures can i uploading only in the weekend..... in this time the datatransfer FX1/7 native hdv stream (1,7 Gbyte) is uploading..... with 8,5 KB/s :-( |
All power to you Wolfgang.
That's dedication!!! :) |

Thank you so much Wolfgang :D :D :D
I am downloading now, I wish all camcorder manufacturers could just do what you did for us.
Thanks again~ |
Many thanks Wolfgang.

more?
GREAT job.
Any plans to do some human faces - interior shots with varying amounts of light? thanks for all the hard work. |
Since there are already people asking for you to do some more examples, I feel a little sad that I have to ask you a favor as well but here it goes: Do you think you will ever get the change to do a comparison between the V1u and the XH-G1/A1, and that’s if you are able to get a hold of both at the same time. If you do, then I hope you are able to survive a thread like that because it may turn into World War 3 knowing that a lot of people including myself have a strong favoritism toward either camcorder.
It’s amazing that you put so much effort into these comparisons. |

Thank you for the comprehensive DOF tests. The berries look good enough to eat. But that would be a bad idea!
Wolfgang how does the Sony's video hold up with lots of motion? Has the FX7's encoder been upgraded from the FX1's? Do you have any clips of full frame motion of the camera? Many thanks for your peerless comparison work. TT |
Yes, i have a many filmed with FX1/7.... i'm runnig fast with this camcorder, there not a camcorder better or bad in the picture quality. Is HDV Codec......
now i end the test's with fx1/7...... my time goes to my work. The last test, is a short "crazy test" with all six sony hdv/avchd camcorder in the next days.... (Z1, A1, V1 all the same video quality in auto-modus) |
|
Are you saying the FX7 has an excellent encoder? How does it compare with the FX1? I'm not asking you to post more clips.
You don't see any issues at all with lots of motion? TT |

Looking at Images 27 & 38, and thinking of other shots with strong vertical/horizontal edges (e.g. bridge shots), the FX1 shows heavy-handed edge enhancement ('sharpness') whereas the FX7 seems a lot more delicate. Does anyone know what the default Sharpness setting is for the FX7? IIRC, the FX1/Z1 was about 12-13 on a 1-15 scale - though 8 may be considered neutral (but soft) and 1 unusable. Is the FX7 set at about 9 - 10 on sharpness by default? Or is the 20x a better lens? |
Many many thanks Wolfgang!!
