Douglas perhaps you could explain the binary vs alphanumeric thing re: canon vs Sony presets?? I have no idea what you are talking about. Could you explain it in terms that I can understand please.

And, I'll add to your excellent point that those who receive equipment for reviews -- get equipment from multiple companies, but almost never at the same time. So when we say "more X or less Z" it typically means a comparison of the newest equipment and previous equipment we've tested.

Thus, my comments about the V1 were in REFERENCE to the Z1.

Moreover, even tests have to be compared A to A. The BBC reports the Sony A1 offers about 8+ stops latitude. With BS on, another 2 stops are added. This is how I judge as well since I assume the cameraperson will be smart enough to switch on BS.

But, Adam may have not used BS. Moreover, there will be those who say that the 10-stops of latitude gained by using BS are "compressed" and not "real" stops. As a geek, I agree. But, it sure looks great.

Which brings us back to something Chris posted long ago. You really can't choose a camcorder by what you read. You've got to use it.

For example, I love the A1's iris-ring and hate the V1's iris-dial. But, with my vari-focal glasses, I can't use the A1 because of where the 2.5" LCD is position, but can use the V1's 3.5" LCD. However, the Z1's LCD is far better for me.

Folks should not assume we "represent" a company or a product. What we write about may not be what we would buy. Although, the V1 -- at least until NAB -- sure is wonderful. :)

Steve, with Adam Wilt measurements not showing anything special in terms of the V1 vertical resolution - do you think your theory about the resolution being in fact too high thus causing aliasing problems in progressive should be revised, or is it still valid (at least for the R50 model)?

All of the Sony menus are alphanumeric (letters and numbers in word format)
The profiles and functions in the XH A1/XH G1 are binary (number-based) It's only a big issue if you need to change settings in the field. Below are a couple of Canon menus from my A1.
