Mounting mic on FX1
 

I've just mounted a mic on my FX1 in the same place as the mic on the Z1. The threaded 2.5mm holes are already there, hidden under a rubber strip. I punched holes through the rubber, and screwed on a home-made Z-shaped little bracket. I then screwed an existing mic holder with shock mount to my bracket. Looks great, and IMO is better than the Z1's, as the rubber strip acts as an isolator between the camera and mic - unlike the Z1's, which is bolted straight on with no insulation.

I'm certainly interested. How did you realise that the holes were under the rubber strip?

the Z1 does have rubber isolaters in the mic clamp. : )

Sean - I checked out my friends Z1 and to me it looked like the solid plastic mic mount was just screwed onto the side of the LCD. Where are the rubber isolators?

I knew that the holes where there as I removed the rubber strip within an hour of getting the camera! I'd like to post pics - any idea of hoe I can attach a pic on this forum?

inside the mic mount. I can't say they are vey effective, though. I put a buddy's Beyer MCE 86 in it and wasn't really thrilled with the fit, it was a bit wobbly. I'll probably tweek it a bit when I get my mic.

My Sennheiser also didn't fit - luckily I had some fancy rubber isolator stuff to wrap around the mic to geive it a snug fit. Rubber inner-tubing will work as well.

Gary, I've mailed off pics of my mic holder with home-made bracket, as well as my home-made "HDRig" which cost about $ 50 in total. Up front is a Century Optics Wide + Ultra Wide kit - fantastic glass. Using the rig is a dream compared to hand-holding the whole day, especially on doccies.

There aren't any. The mic mount for the Z1 is awful. Tranfers every sound of operation to your tracks.

A small Beyer mic holder in the hot shoe works very well also.

What brand is the mic holder you used? I would like to put one of these on my FX1.

Does this mount work? I picked one up on EBAY for $75 bucks, it is well over $100 at B&H.

For the life of me I can't remember where I got the mount I'm using - I found it in my storeroom. What's nice about it is that the whole thing clips on and off, leaving behind only the bracket and a little clip. The rubber strip on the side of the lcd acts as an isolator, so oddly this works better than the Z1 mount, which transfers handling sound. The CAC mount should work - I saw it on the B&H site a while back as well. I think it's meant for a BetaSP camera.

Derek, can you tell me what the make of your mount is please.
Its not a cac mount by the look of it.

Just had a look at a picture of the Sony CAC-12 Camera Microphone Holder and it could work. What I need to know is if the two small screw holes on the Sony CAC-12 match up to the two screw holes on the side of the Sony flip out LCD screen on the FX1.

Anyone know if they do? If so that will be almost perfect, though expensive for what it is.

I like Derek's set up very neat.. so far I've settled for this whci works fine...but have been looking into fixing onto the LCD screen Z1 style.. I suspected that the holes would be there..

Gareth where did you get that piece of kit? I have the PAG light C6 as well which needs to be on the camera at all times, This might be a solution for me.

I've used this little swivel mount that I had with an LCD screen.
(doesn't the dust show up with flash!!!)

It's not the most attractive solution, but it looks like it is wide enough to get around the Formatt matt box. I like the look of Derek Serra's better but as long as it does a job....

I agree it is not the neatest of set ups... but it is practical.. and cheap..

I too would prefer a solution with the mic set a bit further back on the LCD screen... but until I find a suitable mount I shall use this system...

The other plus point is that with the Beyer EA86 shock mount the LCD flips out easily clearing the mic..

The Sony CAC mount will probably fit - if the holes don't line up, just drill a new one that does! My next project after the shoulder mount and mic bracket is a matte box to fit my camera with the Century Optics wide angle adapter mounted. I'm not willing to pay $ 600 for something I can have machined and assembled at the local metal shop for $ 50.

I must confess - I am a big fan of acoustic isolation, so when my customers can't stretch to a fish pole sound man this is what they get...

I like modular, so when you see the pix think " just add cam"...

Great stuff, John. I usually use an offboard Senheisser with a Rycote shock-mount and softie - the onboard mic is just for incidental sound as I hate the sound produced by the biult-in mic. It's very tinny.

Anybody knows the model # for the mic holder that comes with the Z1? I don't have tools and drills to make one like you guys, I think the one like the Z1 is perfect for me.

Ikegami camera's have a similar mic holder that attaches to the VF1539 series viewfinder, as the one posted at the begining this thread.

Ikegami PN PM-214355.

Im not sure of the cost but it could be easily adapted with an L shape braket.
