open faced or fresnel light?

Guys what's the difference of fresnel light to open faced light?
help me choose light for FX1 here's my choices

1;) Arrilite 1000watt or 650watt? focusing flood light. (open faced) why is the 650watts more expensive than 1000watts?
650watts - $273
1000watts - $264

2.) Arri 300 Watt Plus Fresnel Tungsten Light - $320

Juan, check out the photon management forum. The FX1 is not particularly different than any other camera, you'll find the lighting experts over there.

Open face, good for lighting big wide shots, filling a room with bounced light.

Fresnels, better for shooting close ups and pack shots.

The 650 is a fresnel, which is why it costs more. A fresnel allows you to gel the light with a cicular cut piece of gel in a gel holder stuck right in front of the lens; and that lets you use the barn doors to cut the light nicely off the background. With an open face light, you gel it with gel clipped to the barn doors or with a softbox or bounce, so you are, in effect, lighting with a softlight which gives you less control with the barn doors. One is not better than the other--they are different.
