No need to shoot different tapes for HDV and DV. You'll want to select a good brand that is readily available to you, and stick with it so you avoid mixing lubricant types. The story is that there are dry lubricants and wet lubricants, and mixing two can cause head clogging. Some seem to be enthralled with expensive premium tapes, which promises "better" performance. Frankly, the tape records digital 1's and 0's and so long as the tape mechanisms are satisfactory, it shouldn't matter what tape is being used. Both formats transfer signal at about the same bit rate.

Edit: I've been shooting TDKs from an 8 pack blister pack at Costco in my FX1 for about a year, and haven't notice any significant dropout or transport problems.

Tape for DV & HD

I shoot with an FX1 & GL2. I have been using Maxell DV tape inthe red wrapper.
I am paying $3- per tape; have had no dropouts or other problems. The GL2
did not like some of the pansonic DV Pro tapes. I think they would bind ever so slightly, enough to cause take up clutch problems every couple of tapes.

I shoot with the Sony Z1 and use Sony DVM63 tapes designed for HDV. With excellent results from the first 120 tapes so far.

I shoot with Sony FX1E in HD and have had no drop out on any footage so far (about 100 tapes) .

Using Sony DV Premium (cant see the point in the excellence range unless you want to prelong life of tape)

Have thought about swapping to Sony specific HD tapes but the cost is huge compared to premium DV and as I said, no dropouts to date anyway.

I use Sony's DVM-63HD and only this tape, it's sony's HD tape. Not one problem yet. They are expensive but if you buy them more than 3 or 4 at a time, it's not to bad.
