Is HVR-Z1 HDMI 'live out'?
 
Does anyone know if the HDMI/FireWire connection on a Z1 provides live out?

The Z1 does not have HDMI, it has analog component. And yes, it and the firewire are live out. This is one thing which differentiates the FX1 and Z1; the FX1 has a 2 second delay. See: http://www.hdvinfo.net/articles/sonyhdrfx1/compare.php

Perhaps you're thinking of the HVR-V1? It has HDMI.

Thanks - I had been reading threads on the V1.

I'm a little confused as to what the difference is between the Firewire/iLink connection and HDMI though.

Z1 manual indicates you can connect to a TV/Monitor via Firewire. How common are monitors with Firewire connections?

At the back of this is a notion that I'd like to be able to take along some kind of HD monitor when interviewing. I like to keep things intimate for the kind of docu I'm making - just myself and a sound recordist. Having a monitor of some description means it's easier for me to check and check framing at a glance while still being in a position where the subject is looking cross frame while they talk to me.

David Jones has been persuading me that SD monitors are a waste of time over here:

Don't think his Marshall will help me much but I was also taken with his setup, which allows HD monitoring on his Canon A1 via component while sending a digital signal straight to disc via a Kona card.

Wondering, basically, if it's possible to do something similar with a Z1.

HDMI also taps into the uncompressed 4:2:2 colorspace from the sensors. Down the road you can use an AJA IO-HD and use the Apple ProRes codec 422 and get uncompressed quality at SD file sizes. Thats one huge advantage of the V1U plus you can use the HDMI to plug into a monitor.

Boyd I know the delay is in that table but I think there is a delay in both models. Any conversion to DV or HDV has a processing delay so neither is realtime ( meaning no delay to actual event as viewed by the operator). In my understanding the order of closest to realtime would be the viewfinder, analogue out and then all digital outputs would have encoding delay, likely half second for HDV to fully assemble the first GOP. Shooting HDV and output DV over iLink would also have double encode/decode delay too again close to half and second. I have not read anywhere how the DSP works differently in each of the cameras but I am sure that Sony made both cameras identical at their hearts and just added connectors, enabled access to DSP pages for adjustment etc as they have done for many years between prosumer and pro models.

Right now, you can capture uncompressed 4:2:2 from either V1U or Z1U using the Black Magic Intensity card. V1U would be thru HDMI and regular Intensity. The Z1U would be through component and Intensity Pro.
