When I did some low light comparisons using a FX1000 compared to my VX2100, with zero gain on both, I liked the image from the FX1000 better. But it seems like adding gain (grain) is more distracting in HD than SD. While I never really had any grief shooting with high gain numbers on the VX2100, I don't want to do it with HD because the grain is more obvious under the magnifying glass of high definition. At least that was my conclusion.

I've done this on my Z1 & HC3, haven't tried my Z7 & don't know 100% about the Z5 or FX1000...

Sony HDV cameras can down-convert in the camera pre-FireWire. So if you're using an older computer you can shoot HD & the capture / edit as if you shot SD.

Then, down the road if you want to HD all you have to do is batch capture the footage in HD. Re-render any effects on the timeline in HD & boom, you're done.



If you don't need great audio, then the FX1000 can work. But if you want the CF recorder (which I LOVE! on my Z7), & you want professional mics, buy the Z5.

Invest in wireless lavs & you'll get some GREAT audio of the people doing their tricks.

Plus I LOVE the smooth-slow-motion 120fps burst feature on my Z7. Yes the resolution drops from HD, but it still looks great & it is leaps & bounds better than slowing motion down in post production.
