How to record to just the compact flash.

As people begin to get this camera, I expect that many of them will run into the same problem I did of trying to record to just the compact flash.

There are three things you need to do:

> On the camera:
1) MENU - IN/OUT REC - EXT REC CTRL - EXT ONLY

> On the memory recording unit:
2) Turn Cam Link on.
3) MENU - SETTING - CAM LINK SEL - SYNCHRO

Maybe I'm just dense but it took me about an hour to figure this out last night. Hopefully this will help anyone having the same difficulty.

Will that flash recorder work on my V1?

If so where can I get one?

Laurence Kingston February 22nd, 2008 09:59 AM

Yes it will work. Right now the only way to get one is with a Z7 or a 270.

Ron Little February 22nd, 2008 11:29 AM

Oh crud.
How about ordering you (me) a replacement one because the dog ate yours ;)

Laurence,
Have you tried the flash recorder with your A1U? Maybe this is wishful thinking, but is there anyway to record 24p from the A1U onto the CF recorder?

Thanks,
min

On the Z7, you set the framerate in the camera rather than in the flash card unit. The card unit just records whatever the camera sends it. In order to record 24p, you have to have a camera that sends it. Sorry.

Does anyone know if Sony intends to sell the CF recorder, by itself, anytime soon?

Ron Little February 25th, 2008 10:59 AM

Please sell me one. Sony please take my money, again. It’s the same money you took last time. You said it was good for you. Now be good to me. I said please.

sweet

Thanks dude I just spent hours trying to figurre that one out to no avail.
you would think they would include that kind of info in the manual.

No problem.

I'll tell you though, it really makes me think that Sony is going to start offering the flash unit by itself. Basically there are two modes of operation with the flash unit: follow and synchro. Sychro is the one that is specific to the Z7 or S270 and follow will work with any hdv camcorder. The flash unit comes programmed to work in generic HDV camera mode. Why would they do that unless they were going to sell them by themselves?

Syncro works with the EX1 also. The follow does not seem to work.

I had to pull out the sxs card, to get it to work, but it works great! We are doing a shoot this weekend with the EX1 mounted with the cf recorder.

I will be shooting with a FX1, EX1, and the Z7U. I will try to post some footage if I get a chance.

... Now THAT's a really interesting bit of info.

With apologies for drifting O/T briefly, you're shooting EX-1 with all its 1/2" goodness, but able to shoot long 'loads' so to speak, albeit onto CF and at 25 Mbits per second?

What I'm angling at is that I've been put off the EX-1 as I often have to shoot 1-2.5 hours at a stretch and don't want to A/B roll or have mountains of SxS cards. But a 32 GB card at 25 Mbits/HDV would suit?

Hmmm....

Manual? ManuEl, you surely mean. My English is far from perfect, but I guess the Z7 manual has been written by Manuel, from Barcelona - (for those who just came back from a lengthy stay on Mars: he's the waiter in 'Fawlty Towers').

Is that the same " Manuel Layboor " ??? :-)
