Xha1 preset to match nex 5n

Im looking for a preset for XHA1 that will get me close to the NEX 5N look.
Any Nex 5N users have the A1 also?

Thanks,
Jeff

I own one of the first gen NEX-5's and an XH-A1. The NEX-5 seems to shoot a pretty standard Sony image by default - slightly crushed blacks, saturated colours, very sharp image etc... wheras the XH-A1 shoots the standard Canon look which is pretty much the opposite by default! So I'd suggest that - crush your blacks, increase the sharpness and saturation.

Thank you Henry...

I was gonna get rid of my A1 and get the VG20 to match up with the Nex 5N. But now Ive decided to keep the A1 and get the VG20 possibly later. The A1 has a lot of features I need for event shooting..motorized zoom and xlr inputs etc.

If there is a A1 preset you've designed to match A1/5N Id sure like to have it. I use vividrgb a lot on the a1.

Re: Xha1 preset to match nex 5n

completely understand. My VG10 and NEX-5 are acceptable events cams (the VG10 moreso due to the overheat issues and limited record times of the NEX-5) but I also still use my XH-A1, three Sony Handycams and a few other specialist cameras as required for events shoots.

Afraid my tech knowledge dosen't extend as far as creating my own presets for the XH-A1, but vividrgb would be a good starting place for matching footage. If memory serves I use the same preset and only need to do minor colour correction in fcp to achieve a pretty reasonable match.

Re: Xha1 preset to match nex 5n

Henry...
You bring up a good question for me.

Since the VG10 and Nex 5 and 5N have basically the same firmware, the presets on the each camera should be very close to the same. Seems, from what Ive been reading, the VG20 firmware is different with very few presets and effects options.

So maybe it would be best for me to get the VG10, since its a closer match to my 5N. Then I only have to CC the XHA1. What would you do if you were me...go for the VG10 or the VG20?

Help me decide...its driving me nuts. hahah

Re: Xha1 preset to match nex 5n

I'd give it a month or so. When the Vg10 came out we had similar problems to the ones people are now experiencing with the vg20. A poor manual and limited tech support meant that a lot of us thought that features were missing when it was actually just a case of knowing which submenu to use. And there were some things (like accidental pressing of a poorly placed photo button disabling the HUD display) that initially appeared to be a faulty camera instead.

I was going to match the XH-A1 to the Nex 5N, but the original A1 video looked better....so I CC'd the 5N in post. The result is pretty close to a match. I think with a little work I can use both cams on a gig.

This was a quick set up...using tungsten shop light.

Re: Xha1 preset to match nex 5n

thanks Henry.

I have failed to learn more about CC. Ive been searching for a "camera" to give me the "look" I'm after.

I should make sure the camera/lighting I'm using can supply the full spectrum of "information" in a scene, then spend my time learning how to use CC to enhance it. (hope that makes sense)

At my age, patience is fading fast. ha
