Recently filmed a wedding using Sony NX5

Hey folks,

Got the NX5 last Wednesday replacing the HMC151 I adored, just in time to film a wedding on the Saturday (13th March). Here is the opening highlight from that:

Used a customised picture profile, and it seems to match closely the profile I was using on the HMC151.

In comparison to the HMC151:

Pros
- LCD screen is much sharper
- Overall picture image is sharper
- Manual focus and zoom rings are better
- Active steady shot slightly improves handheld use
- Wide angle is similar to HMC151 but with a longer zoom
- Comes with a shotgun mic
- Looks and feels more substantial

Cons
- Noisier at 12dB gain (if using LONOIZ profile on hmc151)
- Didn't come with a shoulder strap
- Viewfinder has issues when markers are on (for my eyes anyway)

The only problem I had was with final cut log & transfer. When the audio was set to PCM I found transfers were significantly longer (especially long duration clips). I came across this in testing prior to the wedding and set the audio to dolby. Transfer speeds were back to normal (same as with the hmc151).

Hi Scott,

The image is great. Really nice even compressed for Vimeo.

I notice the rolling shutter on the camera flashes. Does it bother you in comparison to the HMC151?

Thanks for posting. Nice work.

Nice image, but have you noticed that ugly aliasing sound occuring several times, similar to DAT tape recorder with a dirty head ? Could it be the Vimeo compression ?

Scott, very nice. Which version of FCP are you using?

Cool, you managed to capture some emotion of the special moments.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your replies.

Apart from the bride speaking to the camera in the car, the rest of the audio is captured using a Zoom H2 with an Olympus ME15 tie mic. There is some noise from that, which I think is a combo of the groom's breathing and rustling of the mic against his jacket - the clip makes the mic sit right next to his body as opposed to away from it.

Camera flashes are not so annoying for me as I've used CMOS cameras in the past. It looks worse when you shooting indoors with flashes than outdoors, more noticeable for sure. With the HMC151 it's obviously not a problem at all.

Using Final Cut Studio 3 (if that's what they call it). Images were corrected using the built-in 3-way colour corrector. One thing I noticed was that a lot of the 'blacks' actually looked more navy blue in the outdoor shots. Could be the picture profile I was using. Not sure.

Got a double wedding weekend ahead, so look forward to putting the NX5 through it paces again.

Scott
