User-installable firmware upgrade for NX5!

Hi All

just got an email from Sony saying that a user-installable firmware upgrade is available -- so, if you've been having buffer overflow grief with your NX5, you no longer need to send it in to Sony for a firmware upgrade, they can email a file to you and you can install it according to their instructions.

You will need a reliable power supply.

Cheers

Adam

Sony contact info...

Hi, Adam...

What would be the proper way to contact Sony to get them to email us the firmware update? Do we just call the tech support number? Or is there a specific email address? And is this firmware update installable by both PC and Mac computers? I'm wondering if Sony will say that if you elect to do this option (the user performing the firmware upgrade themselves) if it will also void the warranty if something goes wrong.

I would love to install it myself as long as I'm not putting the warranty at risk.

Thanks, John

Hi John

I guess calling one of the Pro Service Centers, like the one in Teaneck NJ, would be a good start.

I got the offer direct from someone at Sony, and until I get his permission, I'll not be posting his details to the web.

Let the forum know how you get along.

Best

Adam

Can we E-Mail Sony support to get the firmware update?

Ryan Douthit May 21st, 2010 11:54 AM

Here's an official reply from the LA Repair Center:

"The software upgrade is now available and should be ready for download by next week sometime. I will let you know as soon as I get the URL for the download."

I've got an NX5 but how would I know if I had 'buffer overflow grief'?

Mark Goldberg May 22nd, 2010 05:38 AM

Just got my NX5 on Thursday. I took am following this issue, and very much appreciate Adam's description of the buffer issue in another forum. I am extremely thankful that technology is at the place where downloadable firmware upgrades can address the type of problems that used to require the gear to be shipped back!

You'll know when it happens. You get a buffer overflow error message on the screen or viewfinder, and the unit won't record.

Tom Hardwick May 22nd, 2010 07:59 AM

Whooh! Thanks Joe. But this only happens if you're recording to card and 128 memory module at the same time?

Joe Goldsberry May 22nd, 2010 05:49 PM

I think so. I've been using just the flash drive only and have had no problems.

I will like to know where and when the update is available for download

Unofficially there is a firmware upgrade already available, but i don't think anybody will risk to install it until we'll know for sure it's the real deal.
Here's the instructions.

Thanks cristian

That's good news for PC users, what about us Mac users?

Folks,

I haven’t encountered the buffer issue yet but will I need to update the firmware regardless?

Thanks
Allan

Jeff Bradt May 25th, 2010 06:14 AM

My take is yes, you should still apply the fix. The buffer overflow is clearly a design issue and it appears everyone is susceptible to it, whether you've encountered it yet or not.

Allan Phan May 25th, 2010 06:19 AM

Thanks Jeff

Daniel Holoubek May 25th, 2010 08:16 AM

Yes, even if you haven't encountered the problem you can still connect and see what firmware you have. As explained in step #5

5. If the update is necessary, “Current version”
and “Version after the update” displayed at the
bottom left of the dialog box will be different.
Click Next and proceed. (Fig-3)

Wondering if this is suppose to work with HDR-AX2000 AVCHD also.

Ben Moore May 25th, 2010 10:20 AM

I think not, It does not use the flash recording unit, or dual record. I have had no problems, and have not heard of any one with the AX having these issues.

advice on error message and shooting with cards only

I will be shooting an important oral history interview in NYC this Thursday morning....and will ONLY be recording to SanDisk SDHC class 10 16GB cards...I will not do the simul record with the FMU for the obvious reasons.

However, if I encounter an error message while recording to cards, what is the best step by step procedure to save my files and get the camera running again?

As you can tell, I like to have the advice now so if and when I get an error message I know what procedure to follow.

Thanks in advance!

John

Hey, all...been so busy lately. The user-installable firmware is confirmed and will be available the end of this week / next week at some point. More details to follow, similar to what's already been posted. Glad they did this as mailing these things back would be a bit ridiculous.

Quite simply - YES. Just because you have not had the issue -yet- it's the last thing you want happening when recording, whereby your camera will lockup and crash. Be sure to update it when applicable.

Here's the instructions.

Haha, yeah, if anyone was to find the initial versions and install it, their cameras wouldn't be working too well right now. Hang tight!

This applies to the NX5U as it's an issue with that specific camera and when recording with the FMU unit. There are no reported issues with the AX2000 at this time.

Marshall....now I'm confused. My Sony guy gave me a link and instructions today on how to install it.

Should I hold off?

as discussed on phone.....good talking to you!

Jeff Bradt May 26th, 2010 08:22 PM

I'm good Marshall. Thanks man!

Conrad Kramer May 27th, 2010 03:47 AM

Does this firmware update apply to all nx5 cameras - I own a nx5e - european version?

Thanks
Conrad

Ignacio Munoz May 27th, 2010 07:58 AM

Same question as Conrad. I own a NX5N.

Allan Phan May 27th, 2010 08:10 AM

Does any one have the link to download the firmware yet? I have a shoot this Saturday and wish to patch it before I roll out.

Thanks
Allan

Marshall Levy May 27th, 2010 08:55 AM

For those that have been given access to it, they are NOT permitted to give it out to anyone for any reason. You will be given 'access' to it when publicly released but doubt it'll be before Saturday.

That being the case, just use SDHC cards and leave the FMU units at home.

Cristian Adrian Olariu May 27th, 2010 10:31 AM

Firmware 2.0

Now it's official for HXR-NX5E, HXR-NX5M.
Here's the link http://support.pro.sony.eu//software...model=HXR-NX5E but you have to register to get it.

IMPROVEMENT:

'Buffer overflow' no longer occurs during recording with HVR-FMU128.
