All Gabe has written, with just a single reservation:

- the infamous cross-hatch vignetting is a phenomenon separate from the slight corner vignetting at 18mm both Gabe and I have experienced !

The cross-hatch can appear on any lens, and depends solely on the 2 polarizers interference, while the corner vignette on the kit lens is caused by the filter diameter/distance from the lens combination at the shortest focal length; while obvious with the 3-stage, collapsible hood, it doesn't happen with the Marumi wide-angle hood I mentioned.

Gabe, thanks for the detailed post and pics. I was at KTUU from 2001 to 2007.

Just as a follow-up: the Marumi wide angle rubber hood also works well on the Sony NEX 16mm "pancake" lens; using a 49->77mm step-up ring, I can put my Heliopan vario-ND on it and the rubber hood gives some basic protection (both optical and mechanical).

It's a pity though that - once the 0.75% wide converter is applied on the pancake lens - there is no ND option whatsoever; the adapter has its petal hood fixed permanently, and there is no room for a fixed 49mm ND filter in-between the lens and adapter :(

Mark,
Here are some pictures from another thread which explain what's in my rig. I don't have a mattbox, and have two different variable nd filter set ups. I bought a second one so I could have them on two lenses for saving time on outdoor shoots ( for example the 18-200 and the wa sony lens). You do need step up rings with the Sony lenses, and bought several "bower" rings ( very inexpensive.). On the Cnon lenses I have, I don't need adapter rings because they're all 77m ( except my 50mm 1.4).
The two variable nd filters sets I bought were:
1- The Singh-Ray - Over $300, and
2-Another one by "Fader Finders" which is good qaulity and way cheaper.
