PDX10 on-board mic??
 

Does the PDX10 have an on-board mic so that the XLR mount and mic can be removed making the camera a smaller unit? Or is the only way to get incoming sound via that XLR block?

Yep, i believe it does have an onboard mic, besides the XLR..

yes Steve the PDX10 has onboard stereo mic that functions when the XLR bor is not connected.

Yes and actually the on-camera stereo mics have a quite pleasing sound. If you are recording ambient sound with your video, putting away the XLR+shotgun combo, turning on the NR and setting the mic level to manual will give you very pleasing results. Of course you don't want to de this for an interview or something like that were you need a clean voice. In those cases the shotgun, a fishpole with a shotgun or a lav will give you much better results.

I haven't really tried the onboard mic outside, but when I tried it indoors in a smallish room it picked up a ton of camera noise, making it pretty undesirable. It is actually 2 microphones so the sound is (kinda) stereo.

Yes. Possibly you were on automatic level so in a silent room the gain would tend to go very high, thus picking up all the camera handling noise. The NR circuit only helps eliminate the motor noise. Try shooting outdoors or at a party, dinner table, etc. and you will notice that the sound is quite natural and it's stereo depth is interesting.

Also note that if you set the manual gain too low when using the built-in Mic and the NR is on, you can hear the 'noise' of NR sometimes.
