Appropriate Shutter Speed
 

What is the best shutter speed for shooting SURF SHOTS? Or What do you reccommend using.
I am currently using 1/60 It works nicely but sometimes comes out a little wrong.
Any help with shutter speeds would be greatly appreciated.

Try some higher speeds for fast action. Gives the image this hyperkinetic urgency.
Be careful of vertical smear, though.

You might try using one of the adaptive deinterlacing programs or plug-ins in post also and see if you like that look. Do a search here on deinterlacing for some extensive discussion. If you use one of the better ones it should approximate the look of 30p.

1/60th? Do you own a NTSC cam is PALsville, Australia? Are you viewing NTSC footage on a multi-system TV and viewing it in PAL?For NTSC, I'd use 1/60th or 1/100th; for PAL I'd try 1/50th first, but I think 1/100th would be much better. I would not shoot any faster than that with a TRV950 or PDX10.

Boyd I ended up getting DVFilm Maker and I like it. Does a nice job. Slowly but nice.

I will try 1/100 but 1/60 normally looks better.

I own a PAL camera I am still able to obtain a shutter speed of 1/60 though.

My camera in steps shows:
1/3 | 1/6 | 1/12 | 1/25 | 1/50 | 1/60 | 1/100 | 1/120
& so on.

What Lens hood do you reccommend using for surf shots?
I have just been using the standard one, should I bee using the Wide Hood?

I didn't know that the PAL Sony does 1/60th. Are you using a tripod for your surfing videos?

I wonder if the NTSC version has the 1/50th manual shutter speed?

Yes, the 950, the PDX10 and the VX/150 all have 1/50th and 1/60th on the PAL versions.

High shutter speeds are a no-no on the 950/X10 because of the CCD smear. If you keep to 1/50th you'll get the smoothest slow motion and normal motion footage, but stills for web or page will have camera and subject blur. You might well need a 2 stop ND to suppliment the 3 in-built NDs, otherwise the camera will go for apertures smaller than f4.8 - another no-no on that camera.

The big supplied lens hood is the best, but if you always shoot in telephoto (to stop salt spray ruining your cam) go for an extendable Hoya hood - and get even more efficient shielding of that front element.
